Résumé : |
Plastics are subjected to aging during processing, application and use. The aging mechanisms are specific to the type of polymer and environmental conditions. For instance, many plastics yellow and become brittle. While the aging of polypropylene spreads out with local spotting over the volume, the aging of polyamide 6 progresses from the surface to the center. Comparative investigations showed that these are not the only differences. |
Note de contenu : |
- Aging behavior of polypropylene and thermo-oxidative degradation
- Chemical aging processes in PA6 due to thermo-oxidative loading
- Physical aging processes due to thermal loading
- FIGURES : 1 Scanning electron microscope image of extremely brittle polypropylene after 69 days of thermo-oxidative aging at 140°C showing a number of cracks and fissures in the material - 2. Oxidation induction time depending on aging time at various temperatures indicates stabilizer is used up, a radical degradation mechanism begins in the PP - 3. The color change in PA6 sheets due to thermo-oxidative aging at 190°C shows uniform, homogeneous discoloring on sheet surfaces - 4. Bending strength depending on aging time at various temperatures. Bending strength falls rapidly after 1-2 days aging only - 5. Viscosity number depending on aging time at various temperatures. The initial increase in the viscosity number is due to post-condensation of PA6. After that chain degradation follows (solvent 90% formic acid) |
