Ship owners, shipbuilders, and paint manufacturers are engaged in the reduction of VOCs and CO2 emissions. Aside from decreasing environmental impact, low-friction hull coatings in particular are becoming popular with ship owners as an effective method of operational cost reduction. Many ship owners prefer to use silicone foul-release coating (FRC); however, this material requires more care with application than that of conventional self-polishing copolymer anti-fouling coating (SPC A/F). Consequently, shipbuilders are concerned with FRC application not only during construction, but also alter delivery.
This article describes a study conducted during which the authors investigated several potential defects of field-applied FRC, and made suggestions about how to avoid them.
Normally FRC is applied as shown in Figure 1. FRC can be
