PolyéthylèneIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Searching for new and cost-effective methods of waste rubber recycling is a subject of research in many scientific centers in the world. In this paper there are presented results of the research of the extrusion process of cheap and environmentally friendly thermoplastic compositions containing 50% wt. of masses of ground tire rubber (GTR). The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the mixing conditions and properties of obtained products, which is important from a technological point of view. The mixing conditions were determined by using two variables: the screw configuration (co-rotating and counter-rotating) and the type of polyethylene. In the case of both variables, thermoplastic compositions were treated with various shear forces induced by screw speed changes. The influence of mixing conditions on the extrusion process was determined (screw torque, melt flow rate) as well as static and dynamic mechanical properties of obtained materials. PolypropylèneIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : In this work, thermoplastic elastomers based on polypropylene (PP) and recycled ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (r-EPDM) blends with polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) as modifier (0 to 8?wt.%) were prepared by melt compounding via twin-screw extrusion followed by injection molding. In particular, the effects of material composition and feeding strategies were studied. The morphological and mechanical properties of the blends were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tensile, flexural, impact, density and hardness tests. The results indicate that good dispersion and compatibility between PP and r-EPDM particles was obtained and that incorporation of r-EPDM leads to significant increase in PP impact strength. Finally, the feeding order of each component in the extruder was found to modify substantially the final morphology of the blend, thus having a direct influence on their mechanical properties. Polyéthylène téréphtalateIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanocomposite films (with 3 wt.% Cloisite 30B) were prepared by cast extrusion followed by uniaxial stretching, using chill rolls. Two screw profiles with different mixing elements under different screw speeds (N) and feeding rates (Q) were used to prepare PET/clay nanocomposite (PCN) films. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) showed that the clay layers were aligned in the machine direction (MD). XRD patterns depicted that the interlayer distance of clay platelets in the state of intercalation is somehow independent of the processing conditions, but the macro-scale characterization, including barrier and mechanical properties, showed that the level of clay layer delamination was affected by processing conditions. The results reveal that the applied strain has stronger effect than residence time on the barrier and mechanical properties. At the highest screw speed (N = 250 min–1), 27% reduction in oxygen permeability and 30% improvement in tensile modulus were obtained for the more severe screw profile. The purpose of this study is to put forward a simple vibration excitation method for all scale extruders or injection molding machines. To recover the mixing performance of that excitation method, a numerical investigation was carried out using the CFD software ANSYS POLYFLOW 19.2, and the analysis and comparison were made between the mixing performance of a simplified screw element with and without a sinusoidal pulsating speed field. The results showed that not all dynamic states with the superimposed excitation field have better mixing performance than the steady state without any pulsating field. Nevertheless, the introduction of a pulsating speed field under certain parameters setting can indeed enhance the stretching rate, reduce the separation scale, increase the mixing efficiency, and lower the screw force. These findings are of great importance and provide valuable references for the development and application of vibration-assisted molding technology in plastics machinery. TubesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Polypropylene block-copolymer (PP-B) pipes were prepared using a self-designed rotational extrusion processing system. The experimental results showed that though the crystal morphology in the prepared PP-B pipes did not change compared to conventional extrusion, the molecular chains in amorphous region apparently deviated from the axial direction. As a result, in comparison with the conventional extrusion pipes, the mechanical properties in hoop direction and the resistance to crack growth of rotation extrusion PP-B pipes were greatly improved. Furthermore, both the two mechanical properties improved monotonously with increasing mandrel rotation speed and inner wall cooling rate.
