Résumé : |
Wetting of solids by surfactant solutions is involved in a variety of applications. An important technique for studying wetting is the measurement of contact angle with the goniometric method. A drop of liquid, placed on a flat surface, is photo¬graphed and the image analysed to give the angle at the edge.
Reproducibility problems are often encountered in contact angle work. These are related to dynamic effects, surface irregularities and surface contamination. Also, there are various measurement procedures, which can give considerably different numerical values of the angle.
This guideline provides an introduction to the theory, an overview of experimental methods and advice on how to obtain reliable contact angles. The different types of contact angles and the corresponding measurement procedures are explained. Typical values for reproducibility, based on both literature and our own inter-laboratory studies, are given. |
