"Environmental pollution" is often associated with outdoors as it is visible in the form of smoke and dust. But how many of us would really know that our own home, office and other indoor areas can equally be polluted ? According to EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency), majority of population is
unaware of this fact and is facing its consequences on health and well being. As per World Health Organization (WHO) report, around 4.3 million deaths each year are associated with exposure to indoor air pollution and around 3.7 million deaths a year are attributed to ambient (outdoor) air pollution. It's an issue that needs to be dealt with seriously, because people exposed to indoor air pollutants can include infants, elderly persons, housewives and terminally ill persons. These people spend more than 8 hours indoors and could end up breathing air with dangerous pollutants leading to serious health issues. Over the years, environmental agencies and media have been able to create awareness among people in various countries on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and guidelines have been published to define healthy IAQ which are listed in Table 1. |
