However, many of the defects that can appear within composites are very difficult to detect with current non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies. A detailed NDT and/or health monitoring procedure and guideline for proper damage assessment are thus needed. This involves identifying the nature of the damage, its location and extent during different phases of the material and/or structure life, i.e. during manufacturing and assembly, as well as service, maintenance and repair.

The tape, initially based on flax and PP, has been converted into spread tow fabrics, which have very low crimp and provide high mechanical properties. The new materials are suitable for applications which require a combination of high performance, low weight and low environmental impact, such as automotive parts and sporting goods. Matériaux -- AllègementIndex. décimale : 620.19 Autres matériaux Résumé : Reducing aircraft weight is essential to boost fuel efficiency and to lower costs - and also, given the ever-increasing distances that airplanes of the future are expected to travel, to gain more capacity. Innovation in this area is being driven by carbon fibre's high strength-to-weight ratio. The need for high production rates implies the use of extremely complex machines.
