next generation heavy-lift launch vehicle, the Space Launch System (SLS).
The Structural Concepts Element of the Advanced Composites Technology (ACT) project and its follow on the Lightweight Spacecraft Structures and Materials (LSSM) project was tasked with evaluating a number of composite construction technologies for specific Ares V components : the Payload Shroud, the Interstage, and the Core Stage Intertank. Team studies strived to address the structural challenges, risks and needs for each of these vehicle components. Leveraging off of this work, the subsequent Composites for Exploration (CoEx) effort is focused on providing a composite structural concept to support the Payload Fairing for SLS.
This paper documents the evaluation and down selection of composite construction technologies and evolution to the SLS Payload Fairing. Development of the evaluation criteria (also referred to as Figures of Merit or FOMs), their relative importance, and association to vehicle requirements are presented. A summary of the evaluation results, and a recommendation of the composite concept to baseline in the Composites for Exploration (CoEx) project is presented.
The recommendation for the SLS Fairing is a Honeycomb Sandwich architecture based primarily on affordability and performance with two promising alternatives, Hat stiffened and Fiber Reinforced Foam (FRF) identified for eventual program block upgrade.Note de contenu : - PAYLOAD FAIRING REQUIREMENTS AND CONFIGURATION

Rupture (mécanique)Index. décimale : 620.11 Matériaux (propriétés, résistance) Résumé : This short overview is part of a new tutorial being developed for SAMPE Tech 2013 (Wichita) on the topic of composites failure criteria. The upcoming tutorial will cover significantly more information and technology areas with respect to various aspects of different failure criteria and the use of safety factors and required testing. In general, composite structures and products are often designed and manufactured to various industry standards with their structural verification measured against a failure criteria and subsequent testing. At least that is often the intended plan or approach used within the composites industry by most reputable manufacturers. Incertitude de mesureIndex. décimale : 620.11 Matériaux (propriétés, résistance) Résumé : In a 2002 paper by Hinton, Kaddour, and Soden (Composites Science and Technology, 62 : 1725-1797) on a summary of the so-called World-Wide Failure Exercise, whereby 14 theories for predicting failure in composite laminates were tested against experimental evidence, the authors stated that "the theories were not sufficiently robust" and "the designer wishing to estimate the stress levels at which ultimate failure might occur in a multi-directional laminate, can, at best, hope for accuracy of +/-50 % in the majority of cases."
To address this lack of "robustness" issue, we propose in this paper a new approach based on the concept of Uncertainly Quantification (UQ), whereby the stress (and/or strain) variables and the material property parameters in each failure criterion are considered to by stochastic. For material property parameters with small coefficient of variation, c, where OTo illustrate this approach, we construct a simple example based on a combination of the well-known failure theories of Tsai and Wu (1971), Hashin (1980), and Christensen (1997). Using a public-domain statistical analysis software named DATAPLOT, we present a numerical example of how to quantify the uncertainty of stress (and/or strain) variables in a composite failure criterion and estimate the A- and B-basis allowables assuming that the uncertainty of all material property parameters is small. Significance and limitations of the UQ methodology developed in this paper are presented and discussed. Note de contenu : - The classical law of propagation or errors and theory of tolerance limits

Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10278
