Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : A composite model of solids conveying, melting and melt flow in a closely intermeshing counter-rotating twin-screw extruder of modular design has been developed. This is based on combining melt conveying models with new melting and solids conveying models. Computations are made for axial fill factor, pressure, temperature and melting profiles. The results are compared with experiment. The effect of screw speed, flow rate (level of starvation) and die geometry has been investigated. A “screw pulling-out” technique was used in the study. The solid conveying, melting positions, the extent of starvation, and the fully filled regions were observed. It was seen that filling of the screw increases with an increase of the flow rate at a fixed screw speed, and decreases with an increase of the screw speed at a fixed flow rate. The screw filling is strongly dependent on the die geometry and increases with an increase of the resistance of the die. The pressure was also measured, and it was observed that it considerably decreases with starvation. Mechanism of screw filling has been discussed. The simulations and experiments were performed for low density polyethylene (LDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) at various operating conditions, both for starve fed and flood fed extrusion. Fill factor, pressure, temperature and melting profiles have been computed and validated experimentally. All the experimental observations were consistent with the simulations. PoudresIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Experimental studies have been carried out for single screw extrusion of PP/wood flour composite of different concentrations of wood flour. A “screw pull-out” technique was used for investigation of the material transport, melting and screw filling. The effect of the screw speed was investigated. It was concluded that WPC extrusion is substantially different from thermoplastics extrusion. Material transport and melting are strongly dependent on the WPC composition, and operating conditions. The contiguous solids melting mechanism CSM is not observed for WPC of high WF content; however, it may be observed for WPC of lower WF content, up to 50% WF. Several steps of the process are distinguished: material compaction in the solid conveying section close to the active flight and then spreading to the rest of the material, melting which is strongly dependent on the material composition, and shear or plug flow with slipping at the walls in the melt conveying section. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : An experimental study is presented of the melting mechanism in a starve fed closely intermeshing counter-rotating twin screw extruder of a modular Leistritz design. Polypropylene and low density polyethylene as well as different screw configurations of thick flighted and thin flighted elements were investigated, at various operating conditions. A "Screw Pulling-out Technique" was used to characterize polymer behaviour along the screw axis. In particular, the solid conveying, melting positions, the extent of starved character along the screw, and the fully filled region were observed. Polymer samples were stripped off from each screw which was removed from the machine to investigate melting mechanism. Generally, it was concluded that the melt mechanism consists of pellets being dragged into the calendering gap where they are melted due to calendering action. In the case of thick flighted screws, the molten polymer is expelled from the gap and pushes against the pellet bed which is continuously dragged into the gap. ViscoplasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : An extensive modeling study is presented on viscoplastic flows in the single screw extruder. An effective modeling procedure is developed, and fully three-dimensional Non-Newtonian FEM computations are performed to design the screw and die characteristics which may be implemented into the global model of the process. ANSYS Polyflow software is applied to model these viscoplastic flows. An analysis is performed for the flow with yield stress effects both in the screw and in the die. Screw characteristics and die characteristics are calculated and modeled for various viscoplasticity parameters. The effect of yield stress parameters on the extruder operation has been discussed.
