Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The performance of a material in a biological environment is mediated by its surface properties and by the combination of physical and mechanical properties that are required for a specific application. The more relevant surface properties in these respects include its chemical structure (hydrophilicity and the presence of functional groups that could initiate reactions in biological systems) and the morphology (the distribution and abundance of hydrophilic/hydrophobic phases, crystalline/amorphous phases and surface topographical assets). In surface modification, one aims to tailor the surface characteristics of a material toward a specific application without detrimentally affecting the bulk properties. This strategy allows for an increase in the success of implants’ application by increasing their lifetime. In this review, several approaches to the surface modification of polymers are described, as are a number of viable applications. Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A large number of different materials are used in a wide range of biomedical applications for which biocompatibility is essential. In order to combine this with the desired bulk structural properties, it is frequently desirable to apply some form of coating or other surface modification.
Factors involved in the interactions between the body and implants are discussed. The process of cell attachment to surfaces is complex and takes place in several stages. Depending on the application, this attachment may be essential or highly undesirable.
Surface modification may be based on physical methods such as flame treatment, corona discharge, UV radiation exposure or laser ablation. Chemical methods include etching, surface oxidation, hydrolysis, chemical grafting and surface coating. Various aspects and applications of these technologies are considered.
Surface modification is a very important aspect of the creation of medically viable polymeric and non-polymeric biomaterials and thus the use of coating techniques in the creation of biomaterials has been growing over recent decades as they can improve the application properties of materials in end uses ranging from catheters to endoprostheses and cardiac valves.Note de contenu : - FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF MATERIALS
