Réaction de couplageIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this work, high density polyethylene (HDPE)/hemp fiber composites were produced by extrusion compounding followed by injection molding. In particular, the effect of ground tire rubber (GTR) and coupling agent (maleated polyethylene, MAPE) content was studied to modify the mechanical properties of these natural fiber composites (NFC). From the samples produced, a complete characterization was performed including morphology, density, hardness, as well as mechanical properties in tension, flexion, and impact. The results indicate that substantial improvement in NFC impact strength occurred after GTR addition, while tensile and flexural moduli/strengths decreased. On the other hand, the addition of a coupling agent was able to improve adhesion between each phase resulting in better composite properties. Overall, the final properties of the composites represent a balance between elasticity/toughness from GTR and rigidity/strength from hemp and MAPE. From the data obtained, a regression model for different properties is presented to design/control the final properties of these composites. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS

PolypropylèneIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : In this work, thermoplastic elastomers based on polypropylene (PP) and recycled ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (r-EPDM) blends with polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) as modifier (0 to 8?wt.%) were prepared by melt compounding via twin-screw extrusion followed by injection molding. In particular, the effects of material composition and feeding strategies were studied. The morphological and mechanical properties of the blends were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tensile, flexural, impact, density and hardness tests. The results indicate that good dispersion and compatibility between PP and r-EPDM particles was obtained and that incorporation of r-EPDM leads to significant increase in PP impact strength. Finally, the feeding order of each component in the extruder was found to modify substantially the final morphology of the blend, thus having a direct influence on their mechanical properties. Technique de la productionIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this work, thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) were produced based on polypropylene (PP) and recycled ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (r-EPDM) through twin-screw extrusion followed by injection molding. In particular, the effect of different feeding strategies (component introduction order and position along the screw) and r-EPDM content (0, 20, 35, 50 and 65% wt.) were studied. From the materials produced, morphological and mechanical characterizations were carried out. The results show that feeding strategy has a substantial influence on dispersion and compatibility between PP and r-EPDM. The main result is that r-EPDM can significantly increase PP impact strength (495%) with optimized processing conditions.

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The effect of nano-particle geometry on flow and recovery of polymer melts based on ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) was investigated. Two nano-particles, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and montmorillonite clay, were used with concentrations between 2.5 and 15 % by weight. First, by using small amplitude oscillatory shear and transient step shear tests, the linear and non-linear response of the nano-composites was studied. Then, to examine the structure recovery, the same behavior was studied on pre-sheared samples. The linear and non-linear data revealed that the effect of nano-particles in material flow is more important for anisometric particles which can be attributed to their ability to form a fractal structure controlling the rheological properties while spherical particles are not able to form such networks. Recovery experiments revealed that while nano-composites containing spherical particles have relatively similar response in subsequent tests, the rheological properties decreased significantly for platelet particles. The recovery results were also interpreted based on a filler-network mechanism and the reduction of the nano effect for anisometric particles was related to the breakdown of the filler network. These observations were validated by morphological investigations. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTS : Materials and samples preparation - Morphological characterization - Rheological analysis

VulcanisationIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : This work describes the effect of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) addition in natural rubber (NR). Firstly, RGO was synthesized based on the improved Hummer's method then characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to confirm that the RGO surface contains hydroxyl, epoxy, and carboxyl functional groups to improve graphene interaction with the NR matrix. In a second step, the synthesized RGO was predispersed in NR latex using the co-coagulation technique then added at different amounts (0 to 2 parts per hundred rubber (phr)) to a basic NR formulation and compounded in an internal mixer. The results show that the crosslink density of the developed NR/RGO nanocomposites increased by 65 % for RGO concentration of 2.0 phr. For the same RGO concentration, a significant increase in tensile strength (53 %) and Young's modulus (31 %) were also observed. Finally, a significant improvement (26 %) of the thermal conductivity was obtained with the addition of only 0.5 phr of RGO.
