Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Blends of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and biodegradable polymers - polylactic acid, PLA, poly(e-caprolactone), PCL and Mater-Bi|Superscript|®|/Superscript| (thermoplastic starch (TPS) with PLA or PCL) - were prepared in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder, together with polyethylene modified with maleic anhydride (PE-g-MA) used as compatibiliser. The mechanical and rheological properties, morphology and potential for biodeterioration of polymeric materials were evaluated. Blends with PLA showed a reduced elongation at break but an increased Young's modulus while the addition of PCL led to materials with a greater elongation at break and a lower Young modulus. The rheological results evidenced that HPDE and the blend with the highest TPS level exhibited the highest viscosity. The microbial growth test carried out to evaluate the potential for biodeterioration of the blends, using a pure culture of Pseudomonas fluorescens, indicated that HDPE/PCL had a lower resistance to bacterial attack than the blend of HDPE/PLA. This was verified by a higher cell number on its surface after 10 weeks of incubation. The addition of 30 % starch to the HDPE/PLA blend enhanced its biodeterioration potential, the same was not observed in the case of the HDPE/PCL blend containing just 18 % starch. Machado, Auteur Année de publication : 2005 Article en page(s) : p. 121-127 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : This paper reports data obtained from monitoring the evolution of chemical conversion and morphology during the production of a compatibilized polymer blend of PA 6/EPM/EPM-g-MA and of modified polyolefins (grafted with MA) in a co-rotating twin screw extruder. In the first case, the MA content of the modified rubber decreases strongly to almost zero-level and the particle size reduces dramatically from mm to sub-lm level already in the melting zone. The process seems to be mainly influenced by the local flow characteristics, as they assure efficient generation and renewal of interfacial area. In the second case of MA grafting, a similar evolution is observed regardless of the polyolefin type but, for this kind of reactions, temperature and residence time play an important role. A brief presentation of the on-line monitoring tools used in the above studies is also included. Even though monitoring the production process for quality control and/or optimization purposes is generally done off-line, the possibility of using on-line oscillatory rheometry has many inherent advantages. This work illustrates the use of a prototype rheometer to monitor the production of polymer nanocomposites by making measurements at specific locations along the extruder axis. The device is presented and its operation is explained. Examples of its use to characterize polypropylene and polyamide matrix nanocomposites with organoclays and carbon nanotubes are discussed, thus demonstrating the usefulness of the device. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : A prototype on-line rotational rheometer was fixed between a twin screw extruder and a multi-rod die of an industrial pelletization line used for the manufacture of polymer-clay nanocomposites. After diverting the required amount of melt to the device, measurements were performed in small amplitude oscillatory shear and used to estimate the level of dispersion of the organoclay in the polypropylene matrix, by means of correlations that are commonly utilized. The aim is to determine whether changes in clay type, clay content, feed rate and screw speed cause detectable alterations in the rheological response and thus in the level of dispersion, with a view to practical process monitoring and control. The analysis of the data is supported by XRD and electron (scanning and transmission) microscopy observations. Note de contenu : - On-line vs. off-line measurements
