However, these methods and services are reserved primarily for the research lab, clinic, spa or department store counter. Toward the goal of bringing this technology into the home, we have developed a web-based imaging system whereby facial images, captured using ordinary digital cameras and with modest attention to lighting, resolution and zoom, can be uploaded to a central server and analyzed for the severity of facial wrinkles and dark spots. Photographic standardization, essential for reproducible and quantitative image analysis, is aided by a universal headband worn during image capture. Functioning as an internal reference standard, color ships and other graphic information on the headband are employed by server-based software to verify image quality and make corrections for variation in lighting, resolution, and registration prior to image analysis. In this paper, we compare the web-based system's precision, accuracy, and linearity to a benchmark facial imaging system (VISIA). We also assess the system's utility for tracking changes in facial skin hyperpigmentation before and after dermatologic treatment.
