Tannage Résumé : Chrome recycling, or to be more specific, the recycling of chrome tanning liquors, is not a new concept. As long as 45 years ago chrome was being reused in tannery in Leeds, England. In the days of paddle chrome tanning, it was a common pratice to reuse the exhaust chrome liquor strengthened with the necessary salt, acid, and chrome before adding the pickled or even bated stock. As wa approach our present-day situation we can reflect on the development and pratice of chrome recycling as mainly an economic option. Considerable savings were achieved. Today the tanning industry must consider chrome recycling necessary step in the leather-making process regardless of what the proposed EPA standards will be, because we known they will be strict. Tanneries that must adopt chrome recycling today may not enjoy the savings that tanneries have in the past, when it was adopted mainly for economic reasons. When Gebhardt-Vogel undertook chrome recycling in April of 1975, it was purely an economic decision. We, like the rest of the tanning community in Milwaukee, were sheltered from the concerns of our environment by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District, an agency that satisfactorily treated the industrial community's effluent and processed the sludge into a marketable fertilizer called Milorganite. Testing of the chrome recycle system continued until september, when it was adopted as part of the tanning process. Before I continue I want you to understand that I have been employed by Gebhardt-Vogel for little more than a year, so I am merely sharing with you the results of months of hard work on the part of Ed Schendel, our vice president of production , and Howard Siegman, our plant superintendent. They are the ones who spent their evenings collecting exhaust chrome in 50-gal barrels to make this program a success from the standpoint of both leather quality and economics, and they should be recognized for it.
