In this field, the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is of p^rime importance as a binder for high quality, durable, long-lasting, factory applied metal finishes on building component made of galvanized steel and aluminium. In comparison with other coatings based on polyester, siliconized polyester, acrylic or PVC plastisol, the PVDF based coatings have a much higher retention of gloss, a far lower color change or chalking, even after 20 years in Florida. The drawback of these coatings is the necessity to heat at a high temperature (240°C) during the coil coating or spray coating process. But by copolymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) with other fluoromonomers, it is possible to reduce the cristallinity of the polymer and therefor to increase the solubility in solvents, these solutions being able to give films at lower temperature than PVDF even at room temperature. Such copolymers were developed roughly twenty years ago under the trade name Kynar SL and Kynar ADS and will be shown below as non functionalized copolymers of VDF. More recently, new crosslinkable copolymers of vinylidene fluoride were presented in whch we have introduced a functional group, like hydroxy or other group able to react with the conventionnal reagents used in the finishes industry like isocyanates or malamine to givecoatings with the same ageing properties than the non functionalized copolymers but with a higher hardness and a better solvents resistance.
