Titre : Copolymers of vinylidene fluoride in coatings Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Claude Tournut, Auteur ; Patrick Kappler, Auteur Année de publication : 1995 Article en page(s) : p. 99-103 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : 'Non functionalized polymers' 'Vinylidene fluoride' Copolymers Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Among the specific characteristics of fluopolymers, the weathering resistance associated with a low surface energy allows outside application particularly for the protection of others materials. In this field, the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is of p^rime importance as a binder for high quality, durable, long-lasting, factory applied metal finishes on building component made of galvanized steel and aluminium. In comparison with other coatings based on polyester, siliconized polyester, acrylic or PVC plastisol, the PVDF based coatings have a much higher retention of gloss, a far lower color change or chalking, even after 20 years in Florida. The drawback of these coatings is the necessity to heat at a high temperature (240°C) during the coil coating or spray coating process. But by copolymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) with other fluoromonomers, it is possible to reduce the cristallinity of the polymer and therefor to increase the solubility in solvents, these solutions being able to give films at lower temperature than PVDF even at room temperature. Such copolymers were developed roughly twenty years ago under the trade name Kynar SL and Kynar ADS and will be shown below as non functionalized copolymers of VDF. More recently, new crosslinkable copolymers of vinylidene fluoride were presented in whch we have introduced a functional group, like hydroxy or other group able to react with the conventionnal reagents used in the finishes industry like isocyanates or malamine to givecoatings with the same ageing properties than the non functionalized copolymers but with a higher hardness and a better solvents resistance. The main consumers are the marine and aviation sectors, although the wind-turbine industry has developed in volume and now uses vast quantities of composites. Production efficiency is crucial as wind turbines increase in size and volume. If requirements for low cost and high quality are to be met, we need new and improved technologies. One example of the rebuilding process was the relining of the Metropolitan Street sanitary sewer force main in New Orleans East, the hardest hit area of the city. To refurbish the steel force main without having to dig trenches, the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans specified cured-in-place pipe (ClPP) technology. Now, minimising the environmental impact has become an additional concern, opening up possibilities for materials reinforced with vegetable fibres such as flax, which is a fibre that offers stiffness close to that of common glass, with less than 2/3 its density. Manufacturers are also interested in price. Here is a new way to valorize agricultural by-products such as flax tow fibres.
