In a household painting job, emulsion paint is generally used on walls and solvent based paint or popularly known as "Solvent based Enamel" is used on doors, windows, grills or even sometimes in kitchens and bathrooms. In fact fifty years ago, virtually ail paints used were solvent based paints. Today, advances in Emulsion Polymers have resulted in the development of water based enamel that can look and perform like solvent based paints when applied, not only on walls but also, on wood & metal. While water based emulsion paints are safer to use for both health and environmental point of view, use of solvent based paints add to environmental and safety concerns. Major reason for their use till now is that they were economical and emulsion polymers had not yet been developed to deliver equivalent performance. This trend of using Water based Enamel Paints already exists in developed countries and is now catching up in India too. The purpose of this article is to appraise the reader, the benefits of water based enamel and harmful effects of Solvent based paints on environment and human health and also the efforts Dow Coating Materials |
