(Wikipedia)

In this study, surfaces of yellow birch wood (Betula alleghaniensis Britton) were protected with three different types of transparent UV-cured multilayer coatings (MCs), namely MC1, MC2, and MC3. Each MC consisted of three layers: primer, sealer, and topcoat. MC1, MC2, and MC3 contained, respectively, 0, 1, and 3 wt% of nanoclay (NC) in the topcoat, while no nanoparticle was added in the primer and sealer. The surface roughness of coated wood surfaces was measured before accelerated aging and optical properties (color and gloss) were investigated before, during, and after accelerated aging. Statistical results have shown that: (1) all coated wood samples have a similar surface roughness and (2) NC in the topcoat does not have a significant effect on initial color, whereas its effect on initial gloss is significant. There is a significant effect on relative humidity (RH) on color changes, but not between the different types of MCs. With respect to gloss, a lowering of gloss retention with the increase in aging time and RH has been observed for all coatings on wood surfaces. Significant differences appear only at high RH between: MC1 vs MC3 and MC2 vs MC3.

Revêtements multicouchesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : New modern technologies require new innovative materials. Corrosion control of metals is an important activity of technical, economical, environmental, and aesthetic importance. The use of oxides, such as chromates, is highly effective in corrosion protection. Scientists are looking at alternative materials to replace environmentally hazardous materials, e.g., chromates. One of the group of materials identified as corrosion inhibiting are conducting polymers (CPs). CPs have acquired more attentions in the last decades due to their environmentally benign nature and high effectiveness to protect steels against corrosion. The conducting polymer such as Polyaniline, Polypyrrole,Polythiophene, Polycarbazole, Polyindole etc. work as a strong oxidant to the steel, inducing the potential shift to the noble direction. The strongly oxidative conducting polymer facilitates the steel to be passivated. The review paper presented below attempts to summarize extensive studies of Polyaniline, Polypyrrole and Polythiophene polymer and their anticorrosive properties. Several researchers have reported diverse views about corrosion protection by CPs and hence various mechanisms have been suggested to explain their anticorrosion properties. These include anodic protection, controlled inhibitor release as well as barrier protection mechanisms. Different approaches have been developed for the use of CPs in protective coatings (dopants, composites, blends). Note de contenu : - PRINCIPLE OF CORROSION : Anodic reaction - Cathodic reaction

To improve embedding of the nanofillers within the acrylate matrix the filler surface was chemically modified. This modification of the silica and alumina nanoparticles was accomplished by trimethoxylanes having methacryloxypropyl (MEMO), vinyl (VTMO), and n-propyl (PTMO) functionalities. Due to acid catalyzed condensation of organosilanes a polysiloxane shell was formed around the nanoparticles. This shell is bonded to OH groups on the filler surface. The appearance of covalent Si-O-Si-R bonds was clearly shown by multinuclear MAS NMR. MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy revealed the formation of polysiloxane oligomers with different degrees of condensation. In the work presented, an acrylate-nanocomposite formulation contains up to 35 wt.% nanosized silica covered with polysiloxanes. For MEMO modification, surface-anchored methacryl gropus can copolymerize with network acryaltes. But also PTMO-modified composite materials exhibit markedly improved improved properties as compared to the neat acrylate polymer ; e.g., an increased modulus and heat resistance, improved scratch and abrasion resistance. This makes polyacrylate nanocomposites a very promising new coating technology for many far reaching technical applications. UréeIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : To minimize a loss of urea to the environment and also control a release activity, a tunable and controlled-release urea fertilizer (TCRF) was created. Composite coating layers of the TCRF were synthesized using a composite of nanoclay (B27), and a linseed oil-modified polyurethane resin (BURNOCK® UL65). The concentration of B27 nanoclay was varied from 0, 3, 5 and 10 wt% and called TCRF, TCRF-3, TCRF-5 and TCRF-10, respectively. Firstly, nanocomposite free-standing films (NFs) with 0, 0.5, 1, 3, 5 and 10 wt% of B27 were synthesized and tested to demonstrate the mechanical properties of the coating layer. When the B27 clay content increased, the Young’s modulus and yield strength were increased. On the other hand, the elongation at break was decreased. NFs were also characterized by XRD and TEM, which showed a partial exfoliated nanocomposite character. The water contact angle measurement showed that all NFs had hydrophobicity properties (87°–90° contact angle). Moreover, the microorganism degradability test showed that the NFs degraded at 37 ± 2°C and 58 ± 2°C in manure, a common agriculture media. The study on coated urea fertilizers found that the thickness of all TCRFs layers is around 52–54 μm. The nitrogen release profiles of the TCRF at 60°C in water as a predictive analytic model were investigated using an elemental analyzer that is a pathway analysis method to understand the release profiles of the TCRFs. All release profiles fitted well with the sigmoidal model, which was suitable for a common plant growth. The profiles gave diffusion coefficients (D) in the range of 49–69 μm2 h−1 and presented an inverse trend to the yield strength of the NFs. The investigation demonstrated that B27 played an important role in tuning the strength of the coating layers that affected the urea release to the plants and the environment.
