The parameter of leather compressibility will have an important influence on the aesthetic evaluation of the leather. Research was carried out which used a materials tester to compress the leather with a cylindrical probe. Various parameters that could influence the test method were investigated and the test method was optimised. Note de contenu : - Effect of probe size

MesureIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Currently there are no official methods to allow measurement of the surface friction of leather. The parameter of surface friction will have an important influence on the aesthetic evaluation of leather, and so research was undertaken to quantify this parameter. Work has been undertaken to investigate the parameters which influence the measurement of surface friction.
A method was developed which used the technique whereby a materials tester is used to pull a sled (around which was fixed the leather) across a reference material. Various parameters that could influence the test method were investigated and as a result, optimisation of the testing procedure was possible.Note de contenu : - Evaluation of parameters thought likely to affect the test

MesureIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The friction property of leather is very important for the objective measurement of leather’s mechanical performance and subjective evaluation of leather handle. However, due to the visco-elastic and inhomogeneous property of leather and the change of physical properties of leather fibre with temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure, the measurement and analysis of leather frictional forces are a difficult subject to study. As a preliminary and explorative research work, this paper conducts a literature review on friction theories. The frictional forces of leather samples under a constant load and a constant speed are investigated and measured by a computer system. After initial analysis, pattern recognition techniques using four types of clustering methods are used for the analysis of the relationship between leather surface quality and the measured results. Finally, further research work is suggested. Note de contenu : - Literature review on the relevant theories of friction

Qualité -- ContrôleIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this paper, the recent development of a leather quality test and three existing test models are reviewed, followed by the description of a new test model developed by the authors. The new model can be used to test leather bending and rigidity. Compared with existing test models, the significant advantages of the new model are that it is non-destructive and gives a high correlation with subjective evaluation results ofleather handle. In addition, it is convenient to combine this model with other test models into an integrated test environment to measure compression, testing, bending and surface friction properties of leather. It is simple and can be used on-line. Note de contenu :

EchantillonnageIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Properties critical in the manufacture of garments from textile materials were measured on 158 ovine skins typical of those used in garment manufacture, and the location from which properties of leather most represent those of the whole skin identified. Mass, thickness, compression, bending and extension under low loads (lOOgf/cm) were measured at between four and eight locations either side of the spine, and two directions (0 and 90° to the spine) on each skin. The most representative location was adjacent to the spine and in the middle of the skin, and was similar to but larger than that recommended in existing standard test methods for leather. Approximately 10 skins were required to estimate the properties of a batch of ovine garment leather. Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Leather fatliquored with monoakyl phosphate (MAP) possessed an excellent hydrophobicity. In order to elucidate the mechanism of the hydrophobicity due to MAP fatliquoring the binding behaviour and orientation of the MAP molecule (with different alkyl chain lengths) on the surface of chrome leather were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Differences in the behaviour of MAP and mono alkyl sulphonate (MAS) were also studied by XPS.
The interactions of MAP or MAS with the chrome leather are different. MAP combined with the chrome leather with a co-ordination bond and MAS combined chiefly with an ionic bond. The binding strength of MAP varied with the carbon number. The MAP molecule stayed on the fibre surface and a monolayer of MAP molecules was formed. The alkyl chain with C16 or above showed a high condensation force between the side planes and formed a condensed membrane with high density. It can be considered that the hydrophobicity results from the formation of a monolayer of MAP molecules into a condensed membrane.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL METHODS : Materials - XPS measurement - Angle dependence
