TomographieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In the work presented in this article, the non-destructive technique known as micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) was used to investigate the internal state of composite laminates containing embedded fibre optics. The laminates were subjected to cyclic loading and the damage was followed up in order to determine if the sensors affected composite lifetime. The experiments showed no significant evidence of damage related to the sensor's presence. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHOD : Micro-CT setup

MesureIndex. décimale : 620.11 Matériaux (propriétés, résistance) Résumé : Due to the increasing use of composite materials in critical structural applications demanding a high strength-to-weight ratio, reliable evaluation tools are now more than ever necessary. Ultrasound is well known in the field of non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDTetE) and classical ultrasonic C-scan techniques have already proved their usefulness in visualizing defects, delaminations, etc. However, due to their inherent limitations in quantitative characterization, the quest for more sophisticated NDTetE methods to monitor complex damage mechanisms is a significant challenge in current research since one of the most critical degradation mechanisms of composite materials involves fatigue, which is associate with a localized reduction of the material stiffness. The very promising ultrasonic polar scan technique is investigated and discussed in this study.
As part of a unique partnership between the School of Arts Ghent and Ghent University, and with the support of Research Foundation Flanders (FWO), Tim Duerinck developed, made and tested several composite violins and cellos. Carbon, glass and flax fibres all offer their own unique advantages and result in high-quality instruments that can be used in different artistic applications. Note de contenu : - Carbon fibre

ViolonsIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : For centuries, wood has been the material of choice for violins. Carbon fiber instruments have entered the market as an alternative. In contrast to popular opinion that composite violins have or lack a specific sound quality, our recent study provides insights in the diverse sounds and timbres violins from fiber-reinforced polymers can create.
