Transfert de masseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A practical manner on how tanneries can reduce the chemicals they use is a constant area of interest. Many tanneries actively practice research, development and innovation to do this. To remind readers of why this is important, it is useful to remember that a tannery's function is to make leather and it is not there to feed an effluent plant. The management of the tannery should make it a high priority to favour the principle that the chemistry should go into the leather and should not simply go down the drain.
The UNIDO position has often estimated the amount of input chemistry (per tonne) of materials as -400-500 kg. It also reports the estimate of wasted chemistry as -380 kg (Buljan and ICre, 2015). By best estimates, that is 75-95% of the chemicals added that are wasted - incredible.Note de contenu : - Why ?

PhytoremédiationIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Substances that may be present in leather products will leach out of leather (disintegrated or whole) when the leather is at its end-of-life phase. Whether in a landfill, on a kerbside, or in a garden at home, the substances move into the soil and enrich the life of that soil or will negatively affect the natural organisms present there. If the effects are positive, then the organisms, e.g. plants growing in that soil, will be enriched and will grow with greater health or vigour.
Leather is primarily collagen ; a carbon, nitrogen and oxygen rich substrate, but it can also contain the chemicals added to help with the tanning, lubrication and colouring of that article. The leather may even include natural minerals and salts that are stowaways in the material. When the leather breaks down through a disintegration, or composting process, the biomass or breakdown products become a nutritions source of elements for the growing seedling.Note de contenu : - Bioenrichment

Règlements de sécuritéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The author sums up the latest EU regulation around chemical compliance.
The EU regulation that aims to protect human health and the environment through registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemical substances (REACH) is well underway. A chemical thought to cause harm to the environment or human health may be labelled as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC). For the leather industry, European regulators and consumers are concerned about chemicals with the following properties:
- Carcinogenic - chemicals that cause cancer in living tissue
- Mutagenic - an agent that can cause genetic mutations
- Teratogenic - a chemical that can affect embryo growth
- Reprotoxic - a substance that can harm an organism's reproductive system, directly affecting sexual function and fertility
- Persistent - a substance not easily degraded in the environment
- Bio-accumulative - a substance that accumulates in biological tissues
Identified SVHCs are added to a list known as the Candidate List and, after their evaluation, these substances are included on the Authorisation List (Annex XIV), the Restriction List (Annex XVII), are kept on the candidate list, or are dropped of any REACH list completely. Substances can appear on more than one list. The Authorisation List places controls and restrictions on chemicals that are used or sold into the EU.Note de contenu : - New chemicals on the candidate list
