The storage and corresponding evolution of the sludge has not yet focalized the attention of the scientific community. Apart from developing knowledge of the ecology and function of the microbial community in anaerobic digestion processes, it is necessary to control this biological process. The manipulation of strict anaerobic microorganisms is the limiting factor in their isolation due to their high sensitivity to oxygen; therefore, cultivation under anaerobic conditions is essential. This work presents an evaluation of biogas generation and quality. In addition, microbial biodegradation is carried out in bench bioreactors containing two main solid wastes from tanneries: wet-blue shavings and sludge from a tannery wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). We analyzed two storage conditions of the sludge: storage under ambient conditions and under refrigeration. Sludge kept at ambient conditions showed a significantly higher methane production; methane was only detected in vials containing high concentrations of microorganisms. The manipulation of microorganisms did not interrupt biodegradation. The isolation technique with vials proved to be appropriate for the quantification of methanogenic microorganisms in biodegradation tests, although it was not fully elucidated for their isolation. SuifIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This work presents the results of a Gas Chromatography methodology used to characterize and quantify the major fatty acids of bovine tallow. Tallow is a byproduct from processing waste meat in slaughterhouses and from tannery waste. Tallow has a high commercial value, especially when fractionated to olein that is predominantly composed of unsaturated fatty acids. Olein is used as a raw material for the production of leather fatliquoring emulsions or biodiesel production. The fatty acids of tallow and its products of fractionation were first converted to methyl esters, and these esters were then analyzed by Gas Chromatography. The results showed the major fatty acids and their weight distribution. This analytical methodology will allow a quality assessment of tallow by the end user industry. It is also a reliable quantitative tool to evaluate the efficiency and optimization of the tallow fractionation processes. Energie de la biomasseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Advances in environmental protection legislation, along with the awareness of societies, leads industrialists, environmentalists and scientists, to search for production methods or industrial processes with lower environmental impacts. Within this philosophy, the maximum utilization of raw materials, wastes and by-products should be considered as a target for the leather industry. The anaerobic digestion of solid leather wastes may represent a possibility for energy recovery through biogas production. This gaseous fuel (biogas) is considered a renewable and carbon-free since the basic raw material is classified as biomass. This paper presents the potential for energy recovery through anaerobic digestion of different tannery wastes, tanned and untanned, based on the potential for biogas generation available in scientific literature using recent publications. The results show that collagenous materials can be efficiently degraded biologically to obtain a gas with high calorific value in sufficient quantities to supplement the energy demand of tanneries as a complementary source. The average heating values (Higher Heating Value, HHV) of biogas obtained under controlled conditions was found to be between 13.1 and 29.4 MJ.Nm-3 allowing an estimated energy potential of around 123 to 485 kWh per metric ton of rawhide processed. Considering the tannery energy consumption, the biogas may represent from 0.9 to 15% of the total energy demand or from 6 to 31% of the electrical demand. This initiative aims to increase the energy efficiency and improve the environmental quality of the tanning industry.
