Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Protection is the main function of gloves; also comfort of the wearer has to be kept in mind while making gloves without compromising on strength and flexibility. Body dissipates heat in the form of sweat; sweating through hands is likely to be more while using gloves in relatively hot weather conditions resulting in discomfort and slipperiness. In order to overcome these problems there is a need for development of materials, which can respond to temperature changes providing comfort and protection. In our current study, Phase Changing Material (PCM) was encapsulated in condensate polymers of melamine formaldehyde for preparation of thermoresponsive syntan. The syntan was characterised using different techniques such as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Glove leathers made using this syntan were termed “Cool glove leathers” as they showed thermoresponsive behaviour, which exhibited a temperature difference of 1.5±0.5°C to that of control leather samples with 0.5±0.4°C. The cool glove leathers were tested for various properties like strength, organoleptic and thermoresponsive function. Tannage Résumé : Post tanning is an important unit process in leather manufacturing because it imparts bulk properties to leather. Formic acid is used as a fixing agent during the post tanning operation for fixing the post tanning chemicals ; namely, dye, fatliquor and retanning agents. However, formic acid, being an organic acid, is expensive in nature. In order to make the fixing operation a cost effective process, replacement of formic acid by other mineral acids has been attempted in this study. Various combinations of organic and mineral acids were attempted to achieve the desired properties. Both sulfuric and hydrochloric acids have been used as fixing agents in the presence of formic acid either as serial addition or as combined addition. It has been observed that both the acids can be used for fixing in admixture with formic acid, with HCI giving slightly better organoleptic properties. Leathers obtained from various studies indicate that both sulfuric and hydrochloric acid in combination with formic acid resulted in properties comparable to that of the control leathers. Estimation of water solubles from experimental leathers indicated that the pH and leaching of dye are similar to that of the control leathers. No significant changes in the organoleptic and strength properties, and fiber structure of leathers were observed. Hence, fixing with a combination of mineral and formic acid is a feasible cost effective alternative for fixing of post tanning chemicals. RetannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : In post-tanning different types of retanning agents are used in combination to improve the functional properties of leather and therefore understanding the individual effect of each retanning agents on final properties is difficult. This work mainly focuses toward quantifying the individual effect of different weight percentages (4, 8 and 16%) of phenol-formaldehyde resin (PFR), melamine-formaldehyde resin (MFR), acrylic resin (AR) and biopolymers (BP) on physical properties of leather. It was found that the strength characteristics are greatly affected when the retanning agents offer increased above 8% where the effect of phenol-formaldehyde resin is higher than other re-tanning agents. Melamine-formaldehyde resin and biopolymer is predominantly affecting the belly region. It has also been observed that the phenol-formaldehyde resin improves the fullness whereas grain tightness and flatness are improved with increasing the percentages of melamine-formaldehyde resin offer. Biopolymer improves the grain smoothness and the ability of improving the roundness of leather is similar for all kind of retanning agents. A meaningful conclusion could not be drawn in the porosity results obtained due to the heterogeneous nature of leather matrix. Thus, a conventional triplicate method of measurement as done in this study would not suffice to provide a conclusive interpretation of results obtained using capillary flow porometry technique. Titre : Development of alginate-chitosan based biopolymers for leather retanning Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Rathinam Aravindhan, Auteur ; Kalarical Janardhanan Sreeram, Auteur ; Jonnalagadda Raghava Rao, Auteur Année de publication : 2014 Article en page(s) : p. 99-109 Note générale : Bibliogr.

Tannage Résumé : Hides and skins when received in tanneries have closely and firmly packed together bundles of collagen fibers, with elastin and other non-fibrous proteins aiding a dense structure formation. However, in order to enable the easy diffusion of chemicals, a series of pre-tanning operations ensure the opening up of the fiber bundles and the removal of the non-fibrous materials, resulting in a loose structure. A majority of leather consumers often demand properties, which were available on hides and skins, but lost during the pre-tanning operations. One such property is the compaction or firm packing of fiber bundles. While vegetable tanning processes provide for good fullness and firm packing of fiber bundles, the lack of strength and stability against wet heat forces the tanners to adopt chrome tanning. Chrome tanning provides for good inter and intra networking of fibers, but is unable to replenish the firmness found in the original raw material. To overcome this drawback, tanners often resort to the use of a combination of retanning agents in varying proportions. The varying character of these products results in non-uniform and poorer uptake. In this work an attempt has been made to develop syntans from biopolymers such as chitosan and alginate, which could provide fiber compaction to the leather.

Tannage Résumé : The process of preparation of a large number of syntans is based on enhancement of the molecular weight of low molecular weight aromatic/aliphatic monomers etc., through addition polymerization and condensation reactions. The disadvantage associated with condensation process is the use of formaldehyde, which is a proven carcinogen. In addition, one of the major drawbacks with chrome tanning, the lack of fullness, is addressed during post tanning processes by employing synthetic tanning agents. With these issues in focus, formaldehyde free aluminum based melamine syntan has been prepared having particle size distribution in the range of 450-700 nm and stable up to pH 4.5. The prepared syntan has been used as retanning agent in leather processing. The experimental leather exhibits superior organoleptic properties such as fullness, grain tightness, and physical strength characteristics such as tensile, tear strength compared to control leather. Also, experimental leather exhibits higher dye intensity compared to control leather. It is evident from the air permeability and pore size distribution analysis that the prepared product has significantly arrested the pores thereby increasing the fullness of leather. Scanning electron microscopic image shows that the experimental leathers have a flat and compact fiber structure.
