Textiles et tissus à usages techniquesIndex. décimale : 677 Textiles Résumé : A seemingly unending series of heat records and more heavy rain events are the effects of climate change, with fatal consequences for cities and their inhabitants. Flooding and urban heat islands cause more than just the population to suffer ; building and infrastructure damage due to flooding costs billions of euros in Germany alone every year. A possible solution has now been found at the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) at the University of Stuttgart/Germany : Lightweight, textile facade elements called HydroSkin absorb rainwater and release water during hot spells to cool building interiors and urban spaces through evaporation. Note de contenu : - Fig. 1 : The core element of HydroSkin is a spacer fabric, 2 textile layers which are kept apart by threads and thus well-ventilated
- Fig. 2 : The lightweight textile facade elements HydroSkin absorb the rainwater that hits the building envelope at an angle and release water in hot periods in order to cool the building interior and urban space naturally through evaporation

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Whoa! Hold on ! How much thinner do you plan to add ? What thinner do you plan to add ? The data sheet says you can add up to 10% by volume.
Even so, it is not uncommon to see painters (or painters' helpers) estimating thinner addition. It takes an experienced applicator who can save precious time by estimating thinner additions. After all, the reducer is going to evaporate from the applied coating film anyway. Should it matter that the solvent is supplied by "Universal Solvent," and the coating is supplied by "Not-So-Universal Resin ?" Of course it matters, just as it matters when adding 15% thinner when 5% will produce the desired viscosity. When was the last time you actually saw a bridge painter measure viscosity ? And who actually mixes the paint? The per-son with twenty years of experience or the person who has had one year of training twenty times ?Note de contenu : - SOLVENTS IN COATINGS

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : As most readers know, waterborne coatings behave differently from solventborne ones, and have many differ-ent problems. However, when I entered the coatings indus¬try nearly 40 years ago, most of us were blissfully ignorant. We assumed that the industry would be 100% waterborne in a few years, including industrial and automotive. Soon, reality set in. I recall working on waterborne industrial coatings that customers wanted to apply via airless spray. Unfortunately, the extremely high pressure exerted through this method causes a great deal of air to be dissolved or otherwise incorporated into waterborne products. On ap¬plication, some of the coatings contained so much air that they actually fizzed like a famous effervescent antacid as air escaped from the film. However, not all of it was released fast enough, resulting in pinholes and bubbles. Several promising formulas had to be abandoned and the customers stayed with solventborne products.
