This algal growth, particularly in the tropics, contribute to slow deterioration of structures, besides causing loss to the cosmetic and aesthetic appeal of the buildings, thus making early repainting necessary, which results in the increase of maintenance cost. These financial implications have led to the development of newer architectural paints resistant to excessive microbial biofouling. The efficacy of added biocides depends on minimum inhibition concentration required to inhibit the growth of individual alga and hence it is very essential to study the complete profile of algae attacking the architectural paints. This leads to loss of viscosity, gassing and bad odour in the canned paints, while the dry paint film deterioration results in cosmetic disfigurement and possible loss of adhesion, thus making early repainting necessary. Various biocides can be incorporated in these coatings to prevent this microbial damage ; thereby one can prolong the lie and usefulness of these surface coatings. Titre : Ideal biocide for the protection of architectural paints, a dream or reality Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : C. D. Joshi, Auteur Année de publication : 1997 Article en page(s) : p. 33-39 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Peinture Bâtiment Adjuvant Biocide Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An ideal biocide for the preservation of all the surface coatings against microbial degradation, holds the key for the future business of architectural paints world wide. The most stringent specifications and conditions for the use of ecotoxic compounds, laid down by the regulatory authorities and the environment protection agencies of different countries, (western countries in particular), is bound to affect the free use of any new or existing biocides in architectural paints. In near future, India may also join them in restricting indiscriminate and inadequate use ofmany such toxic and environmentally unsafe biocides hitherto being used in paints as preservatives. Thus the architectural paint manufacturers in India should get on to the task of finding out a suitable replacement for the existing biocides through scientific evaluation under Indian climatic conditions. This will not only result in financial gains to the paint manufacturer through restricting losses during production, storage and replacements of fouled paint, but also, make the customer happy, that he is being served with long lasting and quality product. Note de contenu : - The ideal biocide : High activity against a wide range of microbes - Low water solubility - Stability against ultra violet radiations - pH stability - Low mammalian and ecotoxicity - Compatibility with wide range of paint types - No effect on drying properties or over coating - No effect on colour or colour retention - No effect on rheology - Cost effectiveness
