Revêtements antisalissures:Peinture antisalissuresIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In a double benefit for the global economy and world climate, Evonik plans to make ship hulls invisible to micro-organisms and so to protect them against biofilms, algae, and bivalves. Growths of this kind, referred to as biofouling, push up fuel consumption in shipping and, thus also CO2 emissions on the world's oceans.
The International Maritime Organization estimates that the annual costs caused by biofouling lie in the billion-dollar range. Evonik is working on a solution to the problem in the form of 3 new eco-friendly coating that counteracts biofouling. The coating tricks micro-organisms into perceiving plain water in front of them, rather than the ship's hull ; as a result they often make no attempt to settle on the hull.
Biofouling has long been a problem for shipping companies the world over : organisms settle on the ship's walls, changing the smooth surfaces into a rough and ragged shell. This increases frictional resistance in the water, so that biofouling slows down ships. These thon need more energy to maintain their speed, which is bad news for bath fuel costs and the environment. Marine transport accounts far about 90% of global freight forwarding.Note de contenu : - One of the last unsolved problems in the industry

One of the most widely used silane coupling agents is 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (1). it is used in industrial applications, for example coatings and composites, to treat siliceous and other inorganic oxide (aluminium, titanium, etc) surfaces and microparticles for improving the adhesion and mechanical strength of phenolic, epoxy, urethane, polyamide, urea-forrnaldehyde and polycarbonate formulations. In advanced technology applications, particularly diagnostics, it is employed to immobilise antibodies, enzymes and DNA. Aminopropyltriethoxysilane is often referred to by the abbreviations APTES, AMEO, A-1100 or GAPS. The well-recognised commercial success of this technology has stimulated interest in further extending the property enhancement, particularly life-time, for more demanding applications.Note de contenu : - FIGURES : 1. Revêtements -- Effets de la température:Peinture -- Effets de la températureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Formulation development is a critical activity for many industries, particularly paints and coatings. Achieving the correct formulation is imperative, due to the high lever of commercial value attached to the formulated products market. Stability has a direct impact on consistency, performance and shelf-life, playing an integral role in the development process. Therefore, gaining insight into methods that help to improve formulation stability can be highly beneficial.
Indeed, in the UK alone, sales of formulated products amount to some £180bn/yr. This means that getting formulation 'right' is an important goal, with considerable value attached to it. Stability is a crucial attribute for many products with a direct impact on performance, shelf-life, kerb appeal and ultimately, worth. A systematic approach to understanding and developing stability can therefore, be extremely helpful in improving success in long-term stability trials and accelerating formulation.
In this article, we examine how these methods can be exploited to develop stable suspensions, looking in particular at the impact of temperature on stability in paints and coatings.Note de contenu : - The importance of stability

ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Researchers at Hempel have developed an innovative, organic zinc-rich primer coating technology called Avantguard. It uses a combination of zinc, hollow glass spheres and a proprietary activator to provide superior cathodic protection (CP) with greatly improved mechanical properties (crack resistance) and adhesion. This technology activates the zinc so that it can be fully utilised to act as an anode.
The use of glass spheres enhances coating adhesion and mechanical properties. The unique corrosion by product of the activated zinc has a self-healing effect on the coating. The glass spheres block micro-cracks and also create an inhibitor effect by collecting insoluble corrosion products on their surfaces and trapping these species so they don't reach the surface of the steel.Note de contenu : - Organic vs inorganic zinc rich primers
