Tannage Résumé : Complete inhibition of Cr6+ formation from chrome-tanned leather can be achieved by treatment with a three-component inhibitor containing 1.0mmol 3(2)-t-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole, 0.01mmol ascorbic acid, and 0.001mmol collagen peptide. In the present paper, chrome-tanned leather was heat-aged at 80°C for 24 hours and then stored at relative humidity of 33%, 65% or 97% for 12 months to investigate spontaneous conversion of Cr6+ to Cr3+ and to clarify availability of these inhibitors over long-term storage. The amount of Cr6+ decreased as the storage period increased, and was undetectable after 8 months. However, a second reheat-ageing resulted in reformation of Cr6+. This conversion to Cr3+ increased with the water content of the leather. Chrome-tanned leather treated with the three-component inhibitor maintained perfect inhibition of Cr6+ formation for 12 months, even if heat-aged again. Tannage -- DéchetsIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Tannery waste is complex and may, in some cases, be toxic to plants, animals and micro-organisms. This study aimed to evaluate the biodegradability of vegetable tannins used in the tanning industry by filamentous fungi. We evaluated the influence of the concentration of tannin, the forms of culture and the type of tannin used in the cultivation of Aspergillus niger. No differences were observed between the concentrations and the forms of cultivation. However, the type of tannin used influenced the consumption reaching 15% for a condensed tannin and only 7% for the hydrolysable. The results of the tests carried out proved the fungistatic action of the phenolic compounds present in the tannins on Aspergillus niger. With the new fungal strains, the fungi named Pe G8 showed to be more efficient in the biodegradation of tannins reaching 97.3% of the consumption of acacia tannin. The expressive results obtained from the consumption of acacia condensed tannin by the fungi of the genus Penicillium have demonstrated that the biodegradation of condensed tannins by filamentous fungi may be the promising alternative treatment with the potential to minimise tannery waste. Tannage -- DéchetsIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : To explore the interaction between a bioflocculant produced using Bacillus cereus and tannery wastewater, four flocculation mechanisms were studied including chemical interaction, charge neutralisation, adsorption and bridging, and sweep-floc coagulation. First, the interaction of the bioflocculant and tannery wastewater was evaluated using the infrared spectrum. It was found that there was no significant difference of spectrum before and after flocculation, indicating no chemical interaction between the bioflocculant and tannery wastewater. Second, it was found that no electric potential change was detected when comparing the samples before and after the addition of the bioflocculant into the tannery wastewater, indicating no charge neutralization during flocculation. Third, the presence of adsorption and bridging was determined by testing the molecular weight, covalent bonds and particle sizes during flocculation. These factors showed that the adsorption and bridging took place during the flocculation process. Finally, the morphological observation of the flocs exhibited network structures, indicating the existence of sweep-floc coagulation. The results represented that the interaction between the bioflocculant and tannery wastewater mainly involved adsorption and bridging, and sweep-floc coagulation. These natural dyes can be environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic dyes, since they are extracted from sustainable sources with high yields, can be produced independently of seasonal effects, and no hazardous chemicals are used while they are produced. In this study, a screening of natural colourants from filamentous fungi was carried out by cultivation in liquid medium and further the Monascus purpureus extract was applied to leather dyeing. The efficiency of the dyeing was quantified through the remaining dye concentration in the wastewater by UV-vis spectroscopy, and the quality parameters of the leather samples were evaluated by the change of colour when they were exposed to light and heat. The absorption of Monascus dye into the leather was 70.6 ± 2.7% when deacidification at pH5.0 was used. The dyed leather showed good penetration, colour homogeneity and heat fastness. Greffage (chimie)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A cationic collagen flocculant (PCDAC) was synthesized by graft copolymerization using industrial gelatin extracted from leather shavings as the raw material with acryloyloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DAC) as the monomer. The synthesis was initiated with tert-butyl hydroperoxide and sodium sulfite. The graft copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
The effects of PCDAC dosage, system pH, flocculation temperature and time on PCDAC flocculation were studied and the optimum conditions were as follows: PCDAC dosage 0.03g/mL; system pH7.0 ; flocculation temperature 40°C ; and flocculation time 20 minutes. Under the optimum conditions, the new flocculant showed an excellent flocculation effect, and the removal rate of pollutants in a simulated oil field wastewater ranged up to 94.1%. The flocculation mechanism was also discussed.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Material and apparatus - Extraction of collagen - Synthesis of cationic collagen flocculant (PCDAC) - Analysis of PCDAC

Tannage Résumé : Four different samples of cow softy leather (designated CSAS0, CSAS1, CSAS2, and CSAS3) were prepared from a chrome-tanned cow wet-blue of Indien origin. CSAS0 was the control sample wherein no polyacrylate based syntan was added. OSAS1, CSAS2, and CSAS3 contain different polyacrylate based syntans (3% w/w), differing in molecular weight, in addition to the other common auxiliaries used in ail of the four samples. Other unit operations (physical and chemical) for manufacturing leather were the same in ail the samples. Thermal, mechanical, and solvent swelling behaviour of these four semples were studied and we attempted to correlate them with the cross-linking densities of the samples. The swelling behaviour was studied in five different solvents (e.g. water, toluene, xylene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and acetone), assuming definite solvent-bovine collagen interaction parameters and respective cross link densities were evaluated by the Flory-Rehner equation. While studying the mechanical behaviour, some distinguished theoretical models (e.g. Mooney-Rivlin, Flory, and Martin, Roth & Stiehler (MRS)) were tried to fit with the experimental results obtained during stress-stain analyses. In this process a few constants for cow Cr-tanned leather were derived as values of constant A in MRS equation remained in the range of 0.9-1.0, and value of constant B in Flory's equation remained in the range of 0.001-0.005, which had not been reported in the literature. The experimental results showed that the polyacrylate based syntan, bearing a higher level of free acrylic acid groups or a fewer proportion of esterified acrylic acid groups, formed better cross links with chrome-tanned bovine leather in comparison to other polyacrylate based syntans containing higher proportions of esterified acrylic acid groups. Moreover, high molecular weight polyacrylate based syntans provided better thermal and solvent resistance in comparison to low molecular weight polyacrylate based syntans.
