Résumé : |
Facial imaging and quantitative image analysis of facial skin features, especially of those features associated with aging and beauty such as wrinkles and dark spots, are essential and routine in cosmetic science and aesthetic dermatology. However, these methods and services are reserved primarily for the research lab, clinic, spa or department store counter. Toward the goal of bringing this technology into the home, we have developed a web-based imaging system whereby facial images, captured using ordinary digital cameras and with modest attention to lighting, resolution and zoom, can be uploaded to a central server and analyzed for the severity of facial wrinkles and dark spots. Photographic standardization, essential for reproducible and quantitative image analysis, is aided by a universal headband worn during image capture. Functioning as an internal reference standard, color ships and other graphic information on the headband are employed by server-based software to verify image quality and make corrections for variation in lighting, resolution, and registration prior to image analysis. In this paper, we compare the web-based system's precision, accuracy, and linearity to a benchmark facial imaging system (VISIA). We also assess the system's utility for tracking changes in facial skin hyperpigmentation before and after dermatologic treatment. |
