Aromatic synthetic tanning substances, namely the auxiliary (naphthalene-based) and the exchange (replacement) syntans, are in the leather industry. An ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometric method for distinguishing between naphthalene formaldehyde sulfonic acid either alone or in combination with phenolics. This works describes the application of zero-order and second-derivative UV absorption spectrometry to the quantitave determination of naphthalene syntans in mixture with phenolic tans. The method shows good potential as an analytical quality control procedure for aromatic syntan formulations. |
