Résumé : |
Most industrialised nations have now enacted environmental protection regulations primarily aimed at reducing the volatile organic compounds ( VOC ) emitted to atmosphere. Whilst there may be little obvious immediate benefit of their implementation to those living in the neighbourhood of VOC emitting factories, what does make an immediate impact is odour emission and particulary any changes in odour.
The UK Environmental Protection Act requires that the aim should be that all emissions are free from offensive odour outside the process boundary , as perceived by the local authority Inspector'.
This paper is concerned with the emissions to atmosphere, and in particular odour emissions, from the lacquering processes associated with two-piece beer and beverage can manufacture. Despite steady progress in VOC reduction from such processes by the adoption of water-borne lacquer systems, odour nuisance complaints do occur from time to time.
In this paper we estimate the magnitude of the VOC and odour problem using know parameters of the lacquering process and then compare this with experimentally determined odour measurements of actual lacquers. |
