Fire performance and emission of smoke have been evaluated employing different BS and ASTM standards. The results were found well within the limits. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Fire Spread along electrical cables may be mitigated through application of Flame Retardant Smoke Suppressant (FRSS) intumescent coatings as fire protective layers to electrical cables as well as by using FRSS additives based PVC compositions for sheathing of electrical cables. Metal based organic (MBO) complexes of Mo+6 and Cr+3 were used as FRSS in the present study. FRSS intumescent coatings were applied on cables and their fire performance was evaluated using national and international standard procedures. The coated cables did not show any surface spread of flame on exposure and the generation of smoke was also found to be very low. Plasticized PVC compositions were prepared and found to have excellent smoke suppression. The limiting oxygen index was found to be fairly high both for the PVC compositions and the intumescent coatings developed. PolyolsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Fire retardant intumescent coatings based on pentanediono complex of chromium, phosphates, amides, polyols, amino and acrylic binders have been developed for poly vinyl chloride insulated power cables. The fire performance of developed coatings has been assessed by employing international standard procedures. The cables coated with such coating showed significant improvement in circuit failure time in power cable. Developed coating was also found effective in reducing rate and amount of smoke in the event of fire. During exposure, the coating swelled to form spongy, cellular insulating foam which acts as an effective barrier against the conduction of heat to the surface and to the core of electric cable specimen.
