Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Fire Spread along electrical cables may be mitigated through application of Flame Retardant Smoke Suppressant (FRSS) intumescent coatings as fire protective layers to electrical cables as well as by using FRSS additives based PVC compositions for sheathing of electrical cables. Metal based organic (MBO) complexes of Mo+6 and Cr+3 were used as FRSS in the present study. FRSS intumescent coatings were applied on cables and their fire performance was evaluated using national and international standard procedures. The coated cables did not show any surface spread of flame on exposure and the generation of smoke was also found to be very low. Plasticized PVC compositions were prepared and found to have excellent smoke suppression. The limiting oxygen index was found to be fairly high both for the PVC compositions and the intumescent coatings developed. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Preparation of FRSS coatings - Preparation of PVC specimens
- PERFORMANCE EVALUATION : Flammability - Smoke generation - Char formation

Titre : Studies in performance of alkyd-amino combinations based on Neem Oil as a film forming material Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Sudhir M. Malik, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 41-52 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Neem seed extracts, including Neem oil, neem leaf extract and extracts from bark and roots are widely used in India in ayurvedic medicines. Nowadays neem oil is also widely used in commercial products like soaps, toothpaste, insect repellents etc. Azardirachitin, contained in Neem oil is a biologically active chemical, the toxin in Neem oil for many microbes and insects. Various fungistats such as chlorinated phenols, organotin compounds, mercury based compounds are being successfully used in paints; but after taking into consideration the cost effectiveness of Neem oil, it becomes an attractive agent to be used in paints systems such as alkyd-amino systems as film forming material. In this paper, an attempt is made to highlight the use of non-traditional oils such as neem oil as film forming material, formulation of alkyd resins based on neem oil as film forming material, formulation of alkyd resin based on neem oil and blending that resin in various proportions with urea formaldehyde and thiourea formaldehyde resins. The paper also delves into the comparison between neem-alkyd urea formaldehyde blends and the neem-alkyd thiourea blends on the basis of various mechanical and microbial resistance tests. Titre : New generation of inks for rotogravure Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Alexandra Pekarovicova, Auteur ; James Atkinson, Auteur ; Jan Pekarovic, Auteur ; Viera Khunova, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p 85-92 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The environmental and health problems caused by inks containing volatile organic compounds (VOC) call for new solutions in printing ink chemistry and technology. One of the approaches may be hot melt ink, which is ink solid at ambient temperature and liquid at the moment of printing. Such ink contains no volatile solvent to be trapped in ink film or to produce VOC. In this work, hot melt ink for rotogravure printing process based on ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) chemistry was formulated, analyzed for rheological properties, and printed on publication and packaging substrates. The original inks based on ethylvinylacetate and polyethylene (PE) chemistry were too viscous for rotogravure. The polymer matrix was mixed into the carnauba wax and then the rheology was tested again. Carnauba wax significantly decreased the viscosity of hot melt formulations. Drawdowns were made on publication (supercalendered grade A and lightweight coated) and packaging (SBS board) substrates and then the printability data was collected. The EVA/carnauba wax inks showed slightly higher optical density than PE inks.Print gloss, delta gloss and rub resistance properties were better on FE inks. Also, mottling was lower at FE inks. SBS board exhibited highest print and delta gloss and lowest mottle index Note de contenu : - Printing and printability analysis
