In addition to conventional KBr sampling techniques, DRIFT (Diffuse Reflectance), ATR (Attenuated Total Reflectance) and Specular Reflectance (SRS) techniques are also associated with FTIR. Specular Reflectance spectroscopy is useful in compounds having amorphous structures, as well as substances, which cannot be ground to a fine powder for KBr sampling. Such materials are therefore cast as films on reflecting surfaces and the reflectance spectra of the films are obtained, which may have to be converted to easily recognizable, transmission-type spectra, through sophisticated computerized techniques. In the present work, specular reflectance spectroscopy was utilized to ascertain molecular level differences in functional moieties of lac resin, obtained from different sources. Titre : Shellac-based tin can lacquers for the packaging industry Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : P. C. Sarkar, Auteur ; P. C. Gupta, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 41-44 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The suitability of shellac-based compositions as internal can coating lacquers was studied for possible use by the packaging industry. Several formulations based on shellac and different, commercially available synthetic thermosetting resins, including urea formaldehyde, melamine formaldehyde, phenol formaldehyde (resole type) and polyvinyl butyral resin, etc. were evaluated as per IS: 5818 (1988) specifications. All formulations were based in a spiritless solvent medium. It was observed that certain formulations showed good potential for use as can coating lacquers and, if adopted by the can coating industry, were likely to give a boost to the consumption of lac resin in this virgin field, both in India as well as abroad.
