The furniture sub-segment is by far the largest with a share of 56%. Even though the furniture coatings market is quite mature, there is still potential for growth by means of technological innovations and focus on new application areas. As wood finishing lines continue to run at higher speeds, productivity is one of the key focus areas, combined with a desire to reduce energy costs and efficiently use the coating materials. Next to this, introducing specific functionality in the coating, such as improved scratch resistance, is being seen as an important evolution. Needless-to-say, these technical innovations have to comply with legislation (VOC, REACH).
In Europe, the main force behind market growth is waterborne technology. Different waterborne binders are currently available but acrylic dispersions are considered to be the most dominant. These binders are very diverse, ranging from conventional thermoplastic acrylic dispersion to self-crosslinking polymers with sophisticated particle morphologies.Note de contenu : - Polymer design - The importance of good film-formation

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Novel waterborne one-pack and storage stable polymers for coatings are described which form crosslinked films upon drying at ambient temperatures. The coatings are based on proprietary acetoacetoxy-functional polymers which can be conveniently made via multi-stage emulsion polymerization. They are especially useful in high quality furniture applications, where they offer fast dry combined with hardness, early stackability, high film clarity, luster, and superior chemical resistance. Key properties of the coatings are discussed and compared with other waterborne furniture coatings. Note de contenu : - Chemistry
