Prior to that paper, another valuable piece of the puzzle for dimensional stabililty had been given by the seminal paper on collagen which produced the 'Polymer-in-a-box' hypothesis, by Miles and Ghelashvili (1999). Bosch et al. (2002) completes the trio of perfect papers that tell the full story about when leather shrinks and how it will performan in temperature and humidity. The motivation for this article is frustration at how one still hears that chromium tanned leathers have higher stability in leather articles. People who say this are of course correct, but they only tell a part of the story, and when they incorrectly say that chromium leathers have higher dimensional stability in cars, they go too far. Chromium-free leathers have higher dimensional stability in car upholstery - end of story. Schröpfer and Meyer (2011) show the superiority of chromium-free in car dimensional stability unequivocally.
