Vinyl ether films with different curing rates and allyl ether films with different crosslink densities were prepared, and the number and appearance of defects present in the films were compared. The varying curing rates were achieved by using different initiators, whereas the changes in crosslink density were obtained by using monomers with different functionalities. Defects, such as craters and surface crumpling, were observed. Higher curing rates and increased crosslink densities were both found to promote the formation of defects. Atomic force microscopy, scanning acoustic microscopy, and confocal laser microscopy proved to be useful techniques in the characterization of organic coatings, with the latter being particularly well suited for viewing the interior of transparent coatings. Revêtements poudre:Peinture poudreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A dendritic polymer is used as scaffolds for solid thermoset resins i.e. powder coatings. To make it crosslinkable there is a concept of attaching crystalline segments to a dendritic polymer and subsequent functionalization. The rheological performance of these structures makes it possible to reduce the film formation temperature to 80°C thus enabling heat sensitive substrates such as wood and polymers to be coated. The effects of structural variations on the rheological and mechanical properties are shown. The main factors affecting the final properties is the length of the crystalline grafts while the core structure induces only smaller differences in properties. The obtained resins are UV-curable with little or very low levels residual unsaturation present in the cured films. Note de contenu : - Powder coatings : curing temperature of 150°C should be reduced
- Radiation curable systems need less heat
- Another way : low temperature curable hyperbranched polymers
- Hyperbranched polymers are synthetized
- Photopolymerization at 70°C
- High polarity end-groups increase viscosity
- Graft length dominates viscosity and degree of crystallinity

Transition vitreuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The scratch resistance of a series of cationically cured epoxy coatings with varying crosslink densities has been investigated using five different scratch tests. The tests simulate a variety of scratch modes, ranging from single scratches to repeated surface wear. The relative influences of crosslink density and glass transition temperature (Tg) on scratch resistance, as well as the effects of adding pigment and wax to the coatings, were examined. The results show the scratch resistance to increase both with increasing crosslink density and increasing Tg in all tests. It is also shown that adding pigment or wax either increased or decreased the scratch resistance of the coating, depending on which type of scratching was performed. Réticulation (polymérisation)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The synthesis and initiator-free photopolymerization of the following aliphatic monomer, containing both a vinyl ether group (electron donor) and a maleimide group (electron acceptor), is described: N-[5-(2-(vinyloxy)ethyloxy carbonyl) pentyl] maleimide (1). The polymerization reaction was followed with UV- and IR-measurements. It was shown that irradiation with a high power microwave lamp, without the presence of photoinitiators, resulted in very fast and efficient curing. This donor-acceptor monomer was also shown to be useful as a photoinitiator for the polymerization of acrylate monomers. Note de contenu :

Revêtements poudre:Peinture poudreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The concept of using hyperbranched polymers as scaffolds for solid thermoset resin applications is described. A series of semi-crystalline methacrylate-functional aliphatic polyesters has been synthesized and characterized for applications as solid thermoset resin, e.g., powder coating resins. The polyester resins have been crosslinked by UV irradiation producing either amorphous or semi-crystalline crosslinked films depending on the initial structure. The resins are based on hyperbranched aliphatic polyesters onto which crystalline linear aliphatic polyester chains have been grafted and end-capped with methacrylate moieties. The resins exhibit a rheological behavior suitable for low temperature curing powder coatings, i.e., films that can be readily formed and UV cured at temperatures below 80°C.
