Being a renewable source it is considered as sustainable building material and has far less impact on the environment than any other building materials. It is gaining lot of importance as it has low embodied energy, acts as carbon sink and reduces the effect of global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and thus contributing to climate change mitigation. However unprotected wood owing to its biological nature is susceptible to degradation due to combination of physical and biological factors. The biggest threats to wood and other cellulosic material are the fungi and termites. Termites are highly destructive polyphagous insects and are the major bio-deteriorating agents affecting wood in service. They are one of the most troublesome pests of agricultural crops and wooden structures, causing billions of dollar damage annually throughout the world. Most popular and widely used preventive measure to reduce the infestation of termites is the use of synthetic termiticides which are very toxic and harmful chemicals.. Although chemical control is an effective measure of protection from termites but their excessive use is harmful for our environment and the results are not sustainable. Plant derived natural products, biological controls like entomopathogenic fungi, nematodes and bacteria are some of the alternative methods of termite controls with their own limitations. Considering ecological and economic issues in the new generation coating industries, the maximum utilization of naturally occurring materials is the most viable option and Cashew N ut Shel I Liquid (CNSL) is one of the promising candidates for substituting these harmful alternates. The dart brown coloured viscous Iiquid obtained from shells of the cashew nut can be utilized as an effective antitermite, fungicide and as anti-corrosion agent due to its reactive phenolic structure and a meta-substituted unsaturated aliphatic chain.
