Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Animal fleshings represent more than 50% of the total waste generated by the leather industry. Generally, the fleshings represent undesirable waste the elimination of which is often connected with expenses. However, this waste contains valuable protein and fat fractions. For this reason, a complex procedure for separation and utilization of both fractions was suggested. The method involves sodium chloride removal with subsequent protein and fat separation. The proposed desalting operation facilitated significant reduction of ash content and consequently the obtained protein fraction has acceptable properties for commercial application. A mathematical model of this process was worked out. The model enables to find the optimal conditions at which the practical desalting should be carried out. The obtained fat is deacidified and the resulting quality product is suitable for direct biodiesel production. The analyses of the prepared biodiesel confirmed high conversion of transesterification reaction and thus optimal purity of the feedstock. Even the sulfur content which could be an issue in fleshings utilization for biodiesel production was low enough to meet the biodiesel standard of quality EN 14 214. Note de contenu : - Materials

ProlineIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : One of the substances suitable for preparation of biologically degradable polymer composites is collagen. It is the main component of the animal tissue of leather, bones and tendons. It belongs among the most technically important fibrous proteins. The characteristic structure of collagen, with a high degree of internal organization of molecules, is the main aspect determining the mechanical properties of this tissue. Three collagen polypeptide alpha – chains are commonly screwed into regular right-handed super-spiral. These molecules are extremely rich of glycine (26 – 28%) and proline (over 15%). For the intended application native collagen is relatively difficult to be processed without modification. Collagen colloid prepared by hydrolytic decay of the conformational structure after de-amination of collagen with a shift of iso-electric point to the value < 5 was used in these experiments. Further chemical modifications was necessary, e.g. in the packaging industry, to ensure and optimize the thermal elasticity and compatibility with the tested polymers. Ethylene vinyl-acetate copolymer was used as the polymer matrix. For collagen modification, applied modifiers were based on polyhydric alcohols and amines. During the compounding process, individual compounds of the mixture were homogenized. Polymer granulates with different ratios of individual compounds in the mixture were prepared by granulation. Process-ability of the prepared granules was tested by producing foils using blowing technology. Physical and mechanical parameters of the foils were evaluated; strength, elongation, permeability to water vapor and biodegradability. The results obtained were considered mainly from the point of view of controlled biodegradation. Note de contenu : - Preparation of collagen hydrolysate

Peaux brutes -- TrempeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Inactivation of bacterial activity on hides is necessary during brine curing and presoaking processes. Therefore, bactericidal effect of 0.02% quaternary ammonium compound containing didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and benzyl dimethyl ammonium chloride on the mixed culture of Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus pumilus, Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus intermedius, Pseudomonas luteola, Enterobacter cloacae and Vibrio fluvialis was examined in the test media containing 26% NaCl and organic substances by tube dilution method. In addition, the ability to grow of the mixed culture prepared from the test isolates was examined in the salt free Mueller Hinton Broth and in Mueller Hinton Broth containing 10%, 15% and 26% NaCl during 72 days. Bacterial count of the mixed culture in Mueller Hinton Broth containing 26% NaCl was found higher than those in the the salt free Mueller Hinton Broth media after 2, 4 and 14 hours exposure times with the test agent. Our results showed that the test agent could be used in the brine solution where the salt slightly decreased effectiveness of the antibacterial agent. Additionally, it was observed that the isolates of the mixed culture were annihilated faster in the salt free Mueller Hinton Broth than the broth media containing different concentrations of NaCl. After the storage, bacterial counts in the Mueller Hinton Broth media containing different NaCl concentrations were not reduced to low levels. As a result, quaternary ammonium compound tested may be used in hide brine curing and presoaking processes to control Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial activities on hides. In addition, only NaCl application is not enough to control bacterial activity on hides. Note de contenu : - Determination of protease activity

Leather goods, which continue to be preferred by many over artificial substitutes, need to exhibit durable material performance. Strength testing, as related to an understanding of the endurance against force, is an important component of overall material behavior. Therefore, tensile testing should be well developed so as to analyze the properties of finished leathers and acquire realistic practical data. This study deals, in detail, with the evaluation of tensile properties considering the differences between engineering stress and true stress. In this examination of tensile behaviors three groups of garment leathers with different finishes (aniline, semi-aniline, and full pigmented finishes) were used. The samples were evaluated comparing engineering stress and true stress. In a Completely Randomized Design study, the statistical differences were calculated by the Duncan test in the level of P≤0.05. Thereby, statistically significant differences between engineering stress and true stress between each of the three groups was verified.
