Résumé : |
In practice, paint coatings are used to protect a substrate apart from giving it an aesthetic appearance. The protective layer is expected to withstand the widely varying environmental changes and last longer. the adverse changes in the structure of paint coatings eventually lead to its failure in service. Among the prime properties, adhesion of a coating to the substrate is considered to be the most important one. The addition of an appropriate amount of silanes in the paint formulations helps the coatings to adhere well to the substrate and prevent its adhesion being affected by the environmental conditions. Such chemicals create stronger interfacial interaction between coating and the substrate. The role of Organo silanes, which have been used over last 30 years as coupling agents, primers or additives to promote adhesion of paint/coatings with special reference to epoxy coatings, polyurethanes, vinyl based coatings, alkyds and acrylic coatings etc. is reviewed. General observations on the performance of organo silanes described in the end may serve as guidelines in selecting the silane based adhesion promoters. |
