Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Since leather is strongly affected by three main environmental parameters: temperature, relative humidity and UV radiation, this piece of research focuses on the effect that these three factors have on chrome-tanned leather ageing. Chrome tanned leathers were exposed to weathering effects in a climatic chamber in order to identify the most important variables affecting this weathering process and also to check for any possible interactions. Both a multilevel centralized factorial experimental design and an analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used as statistical tools for estimating the effects of the parameters. Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Raw hides/skins used as a raw material for manufacturing leather contain various microorganisms including potential pathogens. The presence of hazardous chemicals during a conventional leather-making process may create extreme environmental conditions for the growth of the bacteria present on hides/skins. Bacteria, however, are known to survive harsh environmental conditions. This study was undertaken in order to determine the survival and growth of certain bacteria during a conventional pre-tanning and chromium-tanning process. Calfskin pieces were decontaminated and inoculated with log8 (108) to log10 (1010) colony forming units (cfu) of Bacillus cereus ATCC11778, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC10145 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, and the survival was monitored following a conventional pre-tanning and chromium-tanning process. The presence of inoculated bacteria in effluent and on skins was determined. A higher bacterial growth was observed during the pre-soaking process, followed by a significant reduction (p?0.05) during the main-soaking, unhairing and reliming processes. Although limited, bacterial growth was observed during the subsequent deliming, bating, pickling and tanning processes. The study showed that these bacterial species are not only capable of surviving a conventional leather-making process, but also showed the ability to proliferate if provided with suitable environmental conditions.

Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The main use of leather is to protect the body against external environment and to provide comfort. However, leather may be used for additional functions specific to 1) an adverse or extreme climate and 2) job-ambience or profession so as to enhance adaptability and productivity of the user. When such an application arises, the leather is termed as “smart material”. Making leather perform the functions it did as a skin on a live animal renders it as smart leather. Hence, the futuristic objective is to make the processed skin termed “leather” retain its memory so as to result in “smart or intelligent leather”. In this paper, it has been attempted to incorporate thermo responsive function into leathers using smart materials such as phase changing materials (PCM). PCMs are capable of absorbing or releasing large amount of heat during phase transitions between two solid states and/or liquid and solid states. Manufacture of syntans using PCM based on two different prepolymers viz, melamine formaldehyde and naphthalene sulfonic acid has been attempted in this paper. The retanning agents synthesized have been characterized using various techniques like FT-IR, DSC, TGA and SEM analysis. Leathers made using PCM incorporated retanning agents have been tested for various properties viz. strength properties, thermal stability, organoleptic properties to study the influence of the PCM incorporated retanning agents.

Spectroscopie infrarouge procheIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The thermal behaviors of collagen in aqueous solution were studied by in situ near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and two-dimensional correlation infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR). The spectral data of water molecule and Amide I region fairly provided the dynamic details about the changes of water molecules and imino groups (–NH) in collagen under a temperature evolution from 25 to 54 °C. The splitting of combination bands of water molecule separately at 1455 nm and 1395 nm revealed that there are two different states of water molecules in collagen molecule, the surrounding free water molecules and the structural participating water molecules. Additionally, the two-step phase shift of the combination band of water molecule suggested that the interaction between collagen and water molecule experience two significant changes during the process of thermal denaturation transition. Based on the study of NIR and 2D-IR, a novel molecular model about the micro-changes of collagen from native to thermally denatured state was proposed. In this model, the breaking of hydrogen-bonded –NH groups occurs at first upon heating and the released –NH groups form hydrogen bonds with water molecules immediately to build a new stable water-mediated hydrogen-bonding structure simultaneously. With the increase of temperature, the collagen triple helix collapses gradually, accompanied by the breaking of water-mediated hydrogen bonds of inter-triple helix at 36 °C, and the breaking of intra-helix hydrogen bonds at 48 °C.
