In Europe, the interest in MS sealants dates back to the late 1980s and can be attributed in part to their environmental friendliness. The current market size for MS sealants in Europe is believed to be around 25%, or one-third of Japan's construction sealant market use. In the United States, MS sealants have been used primarily for industrial applications ; construction use is still in the developmental stage.
This article looks at the changing sealants market and presents a brief history of the growth of MS sealants in the Japanese construction sealants market. It highlights the chemistry of silyl-terminated polyether and provides comparative test results for MS sealants and other leading sealants. It also assesses the significance of these test results for a construction sealant segment that requires well-balanced properties, product effectiveness and environmental friendliness.Note de contenu : - Growth of Japan's construction joint sealants

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Increasing governmental regulation of solvents and VOCs, as well as the need in many industries for significant productivity and efficiency improvements to keep them competitive in the global environment, spawned the development of moisture-curing, polyurethane hot melt adhesives. Initially, traditional polyurethane hot melt adhesives addressed several of these issues; however the technology was somewhat limited. Reichhold has significantly improved the technology with its patented Ever-Lock[R] line of "fully reactive" polyurethane hot melts.
Reichhold's "fully reactive" polyurethane hot melts are designed to successfully combine high performance thermoset bonding and highly efficient production capabilities for the end-user. In addition, this technology allows customers to bond a variety of substrates including plastics, pressed wood products, lauans, metals, stainless steel and vinyls.
Figure 1 shows the chemical reactions of typical reactive polyurethane hot melts (PURHM). At the manufacturing site, polyols - materials that contain hydroxyl end groups - are combined with an excess of isocyanate-containing product. This combination produces polyurethane polymers with terminal isocyanate groups. These starting blocks determine the physical properties of the polymer.
Initially, polyurethane hot melt adhesives function similarly to conventional thermoplastic hot melts and eliminate the need for extended compression or fixturing of the assemblies. Subsequently, the terminal isocyanate groups react with moisture in the substrates and surrounding air to form a thermoset adhesive bond. During the crosslinking process, the product evolves from a thermoplastic to thermoset adhesive, differentiating these products from conventional thermoplastic alternatives.Note de contenu : - Critical performance characteristics

Competent management of the additives to carefully selected hot melts, along with correct pastedotting techniques, produce bonded flexible fabric interlinings that are aesthetically superior and that have greater resistance to washing, dry cleaning, steaming and other stressors.
