We hypothesize collagen fiber networks derived from un-tanned hides can be utilized to prepare high performance green composites and air filters, of which both have a great market potential. Collagen fiber networks were obtained from split hides after the bating step in the tanning process in order to remove the noncollagenous materials from the hides. This study was devoted to understand the effects of a key processing step--dehydration on the morphology and physical properties of the resultant fiber networks, which will be the starting material for constructing air filters and green composites. Five dehydration methods were investigated and observation showed solvent- and freeze- drying yielded the lowest apparent density indicating a higher degree of separation in the fibrous networks that will be favorable for further processing into useful products. SEM observations also confirmed the fibers were more separated from solvent- and freeze-drying than those from other the dehydration methods. Mechanical testing showed the lower apparent density led to lower tensile strength, greater elongation at break, lower Youngs modulus, and higher toughness. The results of this research will be useful for the production of high quality fibrous products and green composites. Vêtements en cuirIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Apparel making is the process of making shell structures from flat fabrics or leathers to match the shape of human body. During this process, leathers are subjected to various types of mechanical stresses, which are indispensable for the garment appearance. The present study involves investigating the mechanical properties of goat nappa leathers such as seam strength, breaking strength, seam efficiency, tensile strength, percent elongation, double hole stitch tear strength, flexural rigidity, initial tensile modulus and formability and establishing a relationship between seam efficiency and other mechanical properties. Seam efficiency of goat nappa leathers chosen in this study range from 55 to 76% in both parallel and perpendicular directions to the backbone. It has been observed that breaking strength of goat nappa leathers seems to have a significant influence on seam efficiency among the various mechanical properties studied with a negative correlation (R = –0.92). This means that modifications in fatliquoring and other related leather processing steps may offer low strength goat nappa leathers with more softness leading to enhanced seam efficiency. These results would help tanners and leather garment manufacturers to make appropriate selection of leather processing steps and sewing procedures, thereby avoiding possible economic losses. And then, the adsorption of the silver nanoparticles by the sheepskin, as well as the morphology and the antibacterial effect of the treated sheepskin were investigated. The UV-vis absorption spectroscopy indicated nearly all of the silver nanoparticles were adsorbed by the sheepskin with this method. From scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations, it was confirmed that the nanoparticles attached on the surface of the sheepskin. The antibacterial effect of the treated sheepskin was evaluated after repeated perspiration treatments. The results of antibacterial study showed that the treated sheepskin had an antibacterial inhibition of 99.9% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, even after 6 cycles of perspiration treatment, the sheepskin still exhibited a durable antibacterial effect with the inhibition rate above 79.4% and 67.1% respective to the leather and the wool. Thus, this study has provided an eco-friendly alternative for the preparation of antibacterial sheepskin without organic compounds, which would be potentially used as a mattress for pressure ulcer prevention.

ToucherIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Nano sized aminofunctional and micron sized dimethyl polysiloxane emulsions were applied to garment leathers as topcoats, to investigate the improvement on feel touch permanency of finished leathers. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and particle size analysis of these two polysiloxane emulsions were carried out. The optimum application amount of emulsions was determined to be 15% based on the results of organoleptic evaluation and dynamic friction coefficients. After the application of nano and micron sized polysiloxane, three different accelerated ageing processes were applied to leathers under controlled temperature, humidity and UV light conditions. For determining the effect of the ageing processes on these polysiloxanes, dynamic friction coefficient measurements, ICP-OES and SEM analysis were carried out. The results revealed that nano sized polysiloxanes clearly improved the feel touch permanency of finished leathers in comparison to the leathers coated with micron sized polysiloxanes. Thereby, it was demonstrated that nano polysiloxanes can maintain the appearance and feel touch of leather product for a longer periods of time.
