Glass fibre-reinforced phenolic cylinder housings manufactured by injection moulding deliver the same performance as die-cast aluminium components but offer a significant reduction in weight, lower manufacturing costs and a better life cycle assessment. Additional benefits include reduced heat radiation, lower engine noise emissions and the elimination of corrosion-related issues. Note de contenu : - A range of candidate materials
- Demonstrator cylinder housing
- Performance benefits
- Weight and cost savings
- Reduced environmental impact
- Building confidence in composites
- FIGURES : 1. SBHPP has developed a phenolic composite cylinder housing for a single-cylinder 650 cc engine that demonstrates a significant weight reduction over the aluminium part, as well as lower manufacturing costs - 2. The composite cylinder housing showing the metal inserts and liner - 3. The injection moulding machine for the composite cylinder housing - 4. Weight comparison figures for cylinder housings manufactured from different materials - 5. Cost analysis for the composite cylinder housing compared with the aluminium part - 6. Comparison of the energy required to produce various materials, and the energy required to produce a component with equal stiffness to steelPermalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=25447
