The instrument is designed for use by non-rheologists, however it is capable of distinguishing viscous and elastic changes, as well as the effects of formulation and temperature changes. It can aslo give some indication of final cured properties. The SVNC is an invaluable tool for aiding in the development of new chemical raw materials and formulations, as well as for quality assurance and plant trouble shooting. Solventborne PSA formulations traditionally were based on modified rubber chemistry. Today they are being replaced by low-VOC, fast-curing systems such as UV-cured PSAs. This article describes current water-based and 100% solid UV-curable PSAs and their properties. Shear, peel strengh and tack properties are reported for systems with various oligomer and monomer contents. The PSAs were prepared to minimize premature polymerization and evaluated by three test methods: rolling ball tack (RBT), 180° peel and shear. The article describes sample preparation, test methods and significant findings. These findings reveal a correlation between crosslink density and shear performance, tackifier content and peel strength, and system Tg.
