A series of side-chain liquid crystalline acrylic copolymers using p-hydroxybenzoic acid as mesogenic group were synthesized by grafting p-hydroxybenzoic acid onto carboxyl functional acrylic copolymers. The monomer compositions used for copolymerization were calculated from glass transition temperature (Tg) using Fox equation. These copolymers were characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, DSC, TGA and the presence of liquid crystalline state in the polymer was confirmed by using polarizing photomicroscope. The potential utility of these liquid crystalline acrylic copolymers for coating applications was assessed by testing various coating properties. Coated films had excellent adhesion, hardness, flexibility and chemical resistance, which are important characteristics for coating applications. |
