The EPA has identified extended aeration as a method "appropriate" for the biological treatment of tannery wastes. In this paper a conventional extended aeration (nitrification) system is contrasted with an extended aeration system designed for combined nitrification and denitrification (N/D) now under development at the Eastern Regional Research Center for secondary treatment of cattlehide tanney wastes. Parallel laboratory scale treatment studies were conducted, with each system held at 18-22°C and a sludge residence time of 20 days. Pretreated unhairing effluent was used as the model waste. Results indicate that in order to meet EPA proposed best available technology (BAT) limitations for chemical oxygen demand (COD) with either system, it is likely that a physical-chemical pretreatment of the unhairing effluent and other streams will be required.
The combined N/D system demonstrated the capacity to handle a nearly 40 percent greater COD loading rate than the conventional system, while producing the same degree of waste removal in terms of COD and TKN (total Kjeldahl nitrogen). |
