In this study, the optimised solvent composition is investigated to enhance the photochromic performance of luteolinidin, a 3‐deoxyanthocyanidin derivative. The visible absorbance ratio between the solution after UV irradiation and after storage in the dark, an index of photochromic performance, was found to be affected by the pH of the solution, and the value reached a maximum when the pH of the solution was 5.7. The type of organic solvent, which is necessary to dissolve luteolinidin, also affected the photochromic performance. When diethylene glycol or dipropylene glycol was used, the value of the absorbance ratio was especially large. Furthermore, this optimised solvent composition displayed excellent photochromic properties with an extract from the sorghum grain shell containing a large amount of 3‐deoxyanthocyanins. Solvent-based ink systems using the dyes were formulated. The inks were characterised in terms of their physical properties which are related to the jettability of the inks, and finally the prints were fixed onto polyester fabrics by thermal fixation. Colour measurement of the printed fabrics was used to measure their degree of photocoloration, fading rate, fatigue resistance, and storage stabilities. The measured properties of the inkjet-printed fabrics were compared with the same properties of the same dyes applied to polyester fabrics by dyeing methods. The printed fabrics demonstrated inferior performance in terms of the degree of photocoloration, superior performance in the case of background colours, a higher rate of fading, and a lower fatigue resistance compared with that shown by the same dyes applied to polyester fabric by dyeing methods.

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Hard coatings exhibiting photochromic properties were prepared by UV-curing of formulations that incorporated surface-modified silica nanoparticles, hexa-functional curing agent, and organic dye (spironaphthooxazine) on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrates. Spectroscopic studies of the coatings indicated effective photochromic activities over the visible range in response to UV irradiation (365 nm). The color density and bleaching performance were found to depend on the silica and dye contents in the coatings; generally, increasing either quantity could increase the color density and raise the initial bleaching rate, and yet it took a longer time to completely bleach the coatings. Furthermore, the coatings were very hard (8H), attached perfectly (5B) on the substrate, and were much more wear-resistant than pure PMMA against the CS-10 abradant.

Teinture -- Fibres textiles synthétiquesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Two commercial photochromic dyes, a spirooxazine and a napthopyran, were successfully incorporated into polypropylene fibres by melt extrusion to produce fibres that showed intense photochromism. The technical performance of the photochromic dyes was investigated using a methodological approach that has been established and validated for the dyes applied by screen printing onto textiles in previous publications in this series. These parallel investigations allowed a comparison of the properties of the dyes in polypropylene and screen printed on cotton. The photocolorability of both dyes was found to be significantly higher in polypropylene compared with screen prints on cotton when applied at the same dye concentration. Of particular interest was the observation of positive solvatochromism, providing evidence that the photochromism is due to the colorants in solution in both media. The colour development rates during UV exposure of the dyes applied by screen printing cotton and by extrusion into polypropylene were similar. However, differences were observed in the thermal fading rates after removal of the UV source, in that the spirooxazine dye reverted more slowly in polypropylene, while the reverse was true in the case of the naphthopyran. Both dyes showed better photostability in polypropylene than in screen-printed textiles. A UV absorber and two hindered amine light stabilisers were found significantly to enhance the photostability of the dyes in polypropylene, although the presence of the UV absorber reduced the degree of photocoloration. Colour fastness of the photoresponsive fabrics to washing, wet cleaning, dry cleaning, rubbing and light was investigated. The CIELAB colour values of the fabrics before and after testing were measured using a reflectance spectrophotometer, and the colour differences were calculated to evaluate the fastness properties. The fabrics had better colour fastness to wet cleaning and washing than to dry cleaning. The fabrics showed higher colour fastness to wet than to dry rubbing. The photoresponsiveness of the fabrics decreased with prolonged exposure time to artificial light due to low photostability of the microcapsules.
