As the salt is used over again hide and leather quality and leather strength decrease even when the salt is re-used only four times Note de contenu : - Table 1 : Plan of trial for curing hides with used salt

Peaux brutesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The growth rates of mixed population of hide bacteria and of pure strains of collagenolytic and non-collagenolytic bacteria have been determinated to show the practical significance of high growth rates in delayed curing and in cured hides. Most of the hide bacteria studied have mean generation times of less than 4 h, which means that under exponential growth rate conditions these bacteria double their number in less than 4 h. This fact and the rate of collagen decomposition by the collagenolytic bacteria can have a significant effect in commercial curing. Tannage Résumé : The patented silflo air flotation process has been operated successfully at several tanneries to purify tannery wastewater (mainl to remove suspended solids but it does not remove dissolved inorganic salts. The next obvious step was to see whether this treated wastewater could be recycled back into all or some of the tanning operations in the interests of water conservation. Trials in the LIRI experimental tannery have shown that the crust leather produced with the silflo liquor from two tanneries - where this was used in all operations from the pre-soak to retanning - was as good as the crust leather made with tap water. This will now require confirmation in large-scale tanning. Shuttleworth, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p. 123-129 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This study takes a look into the factors affecting the efficient operation of the Evaporation Pond system used for the disposal of tannery effluent. Guidelines are given for improving the efficiency of the evaporation pond operation which will minimise grounds for complaints due to the occurence of anaerobic conditions. The climatic conditions for the region are very important factors in making the system economically viable, i.e. the evaporation rate. The results for monitoring, over a period of 16 months, one such system which has been in continuous operation for 15years are evaluated. These results show that the pond system is a cost-effective and low technology method for handling tannery effluent. The disadvantages are the possible production of smell and corrosive hydrogen sulphide, the land area required for the ponds and the fact that the saline wastewater cannot, at present, be recycled back into the tannery. These factors must be balanced against the cost, high technology and close supervision required for more modern methods of wastewater management, which, however, have the potential for water recycling. Cooper, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p. 135-143 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Details are given of various laboratory methods for assessing fungicides for the protection of wet blue hides and evaluating storage margins in production wet blue leathers. Using these methods, a survey of nine commercial fungicide formulations applied to wet blue cuttings has been carried out. Products examined included a number previously found to fall into the low, medium and higher dosage levels (concentrations extending from 0.01 to 0.5 % m/v in 100 % float) to ensure four-month, residual protection. Experimental factors varied including fungicide addition point (pickle or rinse addition) and post-treatment wet blue handling (draining, rinsing, sammying and splitting). The treatment variations examined were aimed at gaining insight into uptake and penetration of the fungicide was found to give markedly improved prediction of field performance. Pickle additionof fungicide was found to give markedly improved storage protection in a number of cases. Post-treatment handling tended to reduce storage protection in effective products only at higher application levels in pickle addition. Decreases due to rinsing and sammying were comparable but tended to be greater after splitting, depending on the degree of fungicide penetration. Post-treatment effects were less marked in rinse application. The results indicate that more detailed assessment of fungicide effectiveness under various conditions in laboratory surveys can provide a better basis for prediction of field performance.
