A uniform and stable dispersion of the pigments is necessary to achieve good colouration properties and high gloss in the final coating. In addition, well-selected pigment dispersants can contribute to increased production economics by allowing higher pigment loadings and faster grinding. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Even though formulation additives comprise only a minor part of a coating formulation, they can have pronounced effects on the physical properties of the final coating. This is especially true for pigment dispersants, which can enter a coating formulation “under the radar” through, for example, pigment pastes. As dispersants are often polar polymers with a low glass transition temperature, the interface between the pigment and continuous phase forms a weak point, especially in coatings designed for high durability. This article addresses the development of an improved dispersant technology. The dispersants are functionalized such that they become part of the continuous phase of the coating, improving overall film integrity. Application examples, in both waterborne and solventborne formulations, demonstrate the effects of reactive technology on mechanical and barrier properties in comparison to conventional systems. solvantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Cu-phthalocyanine pigments represent one of the major classes of organic pigments that are used in the coatings and ink industries. Although used extensively, dispersing these pigments is by no means without a challenge. Especially as the rheological behaviour of the mill base can be difficult to control, which might lead to decreased pigment loading or the need for a synergist. Such synergists usually have a positive effect on rheology but can lead to leaching problems in the final application.
In order to fulfil the market needs, two dedicated dispersing agents have been added to BASF's portfolio.
Its most recent products, Efka PX 4350 and Efka PX 4351 are high performance dispersing agents, specially developed for processing Cu-phthalocyanine pigments ; their use ensures peak performance in viscosity reduction and optimum colour development in high-end solvent-based applications including high solids.Note de contenu : - Block copolymer dispersing agents based on CFRP technology
