Version 5 of the protocol will be valid from october 2010. The audit aims to promote sustainable and appropriate environmental business practices in the leather industry which is very important for the future of leather. However there is a need to now reconsiderer several aspects of the audit including restricted substances lists, the salinity of effluents, and the real environmental effects of chrome compared to other tannages. The processing of green hides, direct chrome liquor recycling and beneficial irrigation of effluent should be suitably rewarded in the next version of the audit protocol. In version 5 the requirements for treated effluent discharge to both inshore and coastal waters are the same : the audit does not require salinity or total solids to be assessed for effluent discharge to rivers or lakes. This is not environmentally sound and should be changed. With appropriate changes the LWG audit could become the single eco-label for leather. Peau -- AnatomieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Since the time of Henry Procter, there have been important developments in early stage processing of hides and skins but there have been no fundamental changes in the process. The developments have mainly been the result of economic and environmental pressures to reduce labour requirements and processing times and to meet environmental regulations. The major unhairing developments have been the rapide hair destroying drum processes and the subsequent rapid hair-saving systems. The promise of enzymes, amines and other systems for unhairing has not yet been fulfilled. Despite enormous research effort, most unhairing and dewooling processes still use lime and sulphides. It can be argued that unhairing is now the least environmentally acceptable tannery process.
Although the adoption of one of the several rapid hair-saving processes now available significantly reduces effluent loads, a better, cleaner system for unhairing is still needed. Ideally, the hair should be recovered in a fibrous form in a sulphide-free process. Unless handled appropriately, sulphides create toxicity, odour and effluent problems. Exposure standards for gases and vapours in the occupational environment and industrial odour emission limits, incorporating plume modelling, are being enforced.
Unhairing systems must be effective on all hides and skins irrespective of breed, age, sex, nutrition and season. Because of the potential hazards associated with the use of sodium chlorite, alternative methods have been developed using zinc chloride, or calcium hypochlorite, plus a fungicide such as sodium pentachlorphenate or phenol. The treatments have no apparent effect on leather quality or yield, and drum, soak, or spray methods can all be used. The zinc chloride treatments are the safest and the cheapest but in some circumstances zinc may be an effluent problem. In these cases methods using calcium hypochlorite or sodium chlorite as an aqueous solution are recommended, provided the chemicals are handled with caution.
