Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The removal of ammonia nitrogen from tannery deliming effluent was studied in a pilot scale stripping and reabsorption operations were carried out in columns packed with one-inch Tellerettes. Ammonia removal efficiency in the stripping column was a strong function of the liquid/gas flow rate ratio. At air loading rates of 630-830 cfm/ft² column cross-sectional area, high ammonia removal efficiencies (>95%) could only be achieved at liquid loading rates of 1.5 gpm/ft² column cross-sectional area or less. The effects of process variables are discussed and design data are presented. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The chemical treatment leather with fatliquor and physical treatment of staking produce similar esthetic results. The effects of two such different treatments on the structure of the leather, however, and perhaps various other responses to deformation, are expected to be different. The equivalence of fatliquoring and staking were investigated by comparing the effects of the treatments on the stress-strain curves and the acoustic emission observed during tensile testing. It was found that staking affects only the first 25% of the elongation at break, lowering the initial modulus, while fatliquors affect the whole stress-strain curve. The initial part becomes concave upward instead of downward, and the elongation and stress at failure are greater. Acoustic emission from leather that was merely staked was suppressed only at small elongations, while it was smaller at all elongations from leather that had fatliquor. The results are shown to be consistent with a domain model of deformation. A nondestructive determination of the elongation of leather at tensile failure, based on acoustic emission, is derived from the observations. Titre : Thermal stability of hide and leather at different moisture contents Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Michael Komanowsky, Auteur Année de publication : 1991 Article en page(s) : p. 269-280 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine the phase transition of hide and chrome-tanned leather at different moisture contents. In both products phase transition occurs over a wide temperature range and is irreversible. The melting temperature of hide increases progressively from about 66°C at 200% moisture content to 221°C at approximately 0% moisture content, while the melting temperature of chrome leather remains almost constant at about 105°C down to about 30% moisture content and then increases sharply to 204°C at about 0% moisture content. It is significant, however, that at all moisture contents below 30%, the melting temperature of hide is higher than that of chrome leather and (according to published research data) higher than that of vegetable-tanned and formaldehyde-tanned leathers. The feasibility of adapting present commercial shoe-manufacturing technology to the utilization of non-chrome leathers is discussed in light of the research findings obtained. Titre : Thermodynamic analysis of thermal denaturation of hide and leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Michael Komanowsky, Auteur Année de publication : 1992 Article en page(s) : p. 52-66 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Both real (based on mole of collagen) and effective (based on mole of independently melting cooperative regions) thermodynamic parameters of collagen denaturation and the number and size of independently melting cooperative regions can be calculated from data obtained using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC studies of hide collagen and chrome-tanned leather with varied water content were used to validate the following assumptions: (1) the length and number of independently melting cooperative regions are related to the distance between the number of hide-charge-density domains known to exist in collagen; (2) enhanced electrostatic interactions in these high-charge density domains stabilize the collagen triple helix leading to a decreased number of domains and higher melting temperatures. For hide collagen, the number of independently melting cooperative regions found was 52, in close agreement with the 57 bands observed by electron microscopy in positively stained native collagen fibrils. Chrome tanning reduced the number of regions found by DSC to 19. Air drying of hide had the same effect as tanning probably due to enhanced electrostatic interactions in the absence of water. Lyophilized hide, adjusted to 20% moisture content, had 15 and chrome-tanned leather at the same moisture content had 10 independently melting regions. Application to leather processing is dicussed.
